Anytime you see this, odds are it's not true.
This one is overblown. They are valid area codes. There were some scammers based with phone numbers in this area code, but that doesn't make the entire area code devoted to scammers.
Of course, if you have no reason to expect a call from the Caribbean Islands (809); the British Virgin Islands (284); or Jamaica (876), then it probably is a scam.
