I was at work with the TV on in the lobby. A girl said her Dad cast spirits out of her when she was 9. Dr. Phil said he was not going to go against anyone who believes in exorcism.

He asked her, "Do you believe you were possessed?"

She said, Yes, at the time I did

Then I had to help with a dog.

Came back she said she became sexually active at 13 and had a baby at 14 and blames the exorcism.... To me, if there was an exorcism it doesn't sound like it worked....

oh my!

"When I was 9, my father performed an exorcism on me because he thought I was possessed by the devil," says Sharon. "My father would have exorcisms at least four, five times a week in our living room. My brothers and I would hear everything that was going on. I felt the evil spirits were in my bedroom."

The night of the alleged exorcism, Sharon's mother came upstairs to prepare her it. "I remember being terrified," she says, wiping her cheeks. "She took me by my hand down to my father, and he sat me down in one of the chairs down in the living room, and he started to pray ... My father believed that I was possessed with four different spirits: fear, murder, hate and lust. I remember during the exorcism, my father asked, 'What is your name?' I heard myself answer, 'I am lust' ... I felt that there was some unseen force."

Now 26 years later, Sharon believes the alleged exorcism ruined her life. She got pregnant at 14. "My father called me a pig. I had my first son when I was 15. I got pregnant after that and I had my second son. When I was 18, I decided to rent an apartment. My father told me that nothing good was going to come out of it. I moved into my apartment and three days later there was a fire and I lost everything. I felt my father had cursed me."

When Sharon's mother died of ovarian cancer, she felt responsible for it. "I always felt it was my fault because I brought sin into my family. It's caused me to feel like there's a little devil on my shoulder. As far as I'm concerned, this is the worst thing that somebody could ever do to a kid. I feel like a freak," she says, doubling over in tears.

"Do you believe that you are possessed of demons?" Dr. Phil asks Sharon.

"No."

"Do you believe that you needed an exorcism at the age of 9?"

"I probably did."

"When you say that this has ruined your life, tell me what you mean?" Dr. Phil probes.

"I've walked through life terrified."

"Do you believe you're cursed?"

Sharon ponders the question. "I believe that I am somewhat cursed, yes," she replies. She recounts for Dr. Phil how fearful she was of being brought down into the living room the night of the alleged exorcism. "I was terrified in my room. I was terrified of noises I heard. I was terrified all the time. It's no wonder I was. Listening to that every night. I just want to know if I'm supposed to have this follow me for the rest of my life. I've been insecure. I've been promiscuous and I feel like it all comes down to what happened to me when I was little."

"If I were you, I would take whatever steps necessary to make sure that I was doing what I could at a mental, emotional adjustment level to not be controlled by those thoughts and those feelings," Dr. Phil advises. "What I hate is for people to take an external locus of control, which says, 'The destiny of my life — the outcome of my life, the quality of my life, the experience of it — is controlled by something else."

Sharon says her alleged exorcism makes her grapple with her beliefs. "I'm asking myself constantly, 'Am I going to hell?' 'Is this the wrong thing to do?'" she says tearfully.

"I'm talking opinion now. I don't talk about religion. I don't talk about politics and I don't like to drive people's opinions on social issues on this show," Dr. Phil declares. "I'm just going to tell you what I think and believe. I've been doing this for 30 years, and I'm looking you square in the eye, and I think you are a sweet spirit. My advice to you is to find a church home where you can be spiritually fed. And I think you should couple that with some diagnosis, some counseling [to determine] where you are mentally and emotionally ... Don't make a decision. Cover all your bets."

I saw about 1/2 of the show...and the 1/2 I saw I thought he handled very well. He specifically steered away from making any judgments concerning religious beliefs/understandings...but he did keep making fun of psychics. That backfired on him when he asked one of the guests if what he said to her made any sense. She replied, "What you said to me was exactly what the psychic said to me." Dr Phil was stumped. LOL!

The president, or vp or something, of one of Dr Phil's BOD is a psychiatrist that has extensive training in not only psychiatry, but also in how religions come into play concerning psychiatry. He is also one of the after-show therapists that Dr Phil uses in difficult/extreme cases.

Anyway, this man was on the 'possession' show and spoke eloquently about learning the difference between what is spiritual and, therefore, out of one's control, and what is terrestrial and, therefore, can be dealt with 'in this realm', so to speak. He didn't say it just like that, but that is the gist I got...especially since his experience with Shaman around the world was cited by Dr Phil during the show.

Anyway, much of what I do when I'm working with people with similar issues is to help them 'peel back the layers' and find out the original trigger incident...and that's pretty much the upshot of the show. IMO.

:D

Well hey there Edi! Good to see you around again. We moved to KCK about 18 months ago. I'm pretty sure I've gotten over my fear of riding around town with an extwi person...so maybe we can try to get to know one another again? I mean, all in all, if there was a demon or a curse involved, I think it's gone now. :D

My email is in my profile.
