Hey Batman, when you roasted them at your grandmother's, were they done in an oven, what temperature, how long, if you remember, can you please share the details?
OH MAN !!!! I feel like i just won the lottery!!!!!! One of my daughter's friends told us of another place to gather chestnuts and we just checked it out, it was on someone's property so we asked the guy and he told us to go for it, take all we want! Well we just went nuts!!!!! There were hundreds and hundreds of them everywhere!! Then to top it all off his wife comes out to the front with a bucket full of aleast 15 lbs worth and dumps them all into my bag, I couldn't believe it, my daughter and I were just thrilled !!

For those of you just tuning in, my avatar was Batman until I found the Green Lantern pic I like.
Anyway, drawing on a memory from forty years ago, Grandma and I would actually roast the chestnuts over a fire in the fireplace in a kind of wire basket. I don't recall any particular amount of time, but th chestnuts were hot and tender when done. It was probably trial-and-error.

Cowgirl: Set your oven to about 300 - 325 degrees, and put the nuts on a cookie sheet. You'll hear them pop when they're done.
I have never seen a chestnut before, and of course have never eaten one. Here in Texas we have pecans, which are very good. The only chestnuts here are horses. hee hee tcat

We had a chestnut tree when I was young.. I remember they were good enough to endure the stinking barbs on the husk!
Fresh chestnuts.. ahh.
