Interestingly, the film was made in north Wales and therefore you are not actually seeing China in the film at all.
I would recommend the book about Gladys called "The Small Woman" by Alan Burgess which is based upon actual interviews with her.

I have seen this movie once.. and it was compelling to say the least.
My mother saw it when it came out in 1958, and still claims it is her alltime favourite film.
It is an incredible movie!
