I've been about 50 miles down the coast onto the Mayan Riviera toward Tulum which I enjoyed immensely.
There are 100's of resorts of all types down that way depending on which way you want to go. There are rustic to opulent places catering to everything from families, to ecotourists to hedonists
I stayed in a midrange all inclusive called Club Maeva which was fine. Private beach out the door, all the usual activities, pools etc.
The food was good, the staff was very good and there wasn't the 'spring break' type of mentality that pervades a lot of Cancun. It was family friendly.
I found that as a last minute deal on Orbitz, but lately I've been finding good deals through Travelzoo.
The Mayans are incredibly friendly people, check out some of the villages in the jungle and of course the Mayan Ruins
Hi! Wish I could help as I went about 35 minutes south of Cancun last October (during off season)..perfect to Palaya deCarmen..as a bud of mine rents us his condo for nine days..much much much better than Americanized Cancun & still small & well attended. Alot of old Mexico & of course more & more of the US of A..let me know what you find out, as our plane tickets outa Indy are typically $300 ish. my new e addy is floridian75days@yahoo.com if you want to compare notes...& yes Tulum & Xel-Ha are super..JJ
Thanks for your replies & info. Sorry ex, I just know you'd be great company but... :)-->
My options are somewhat limited since it will be part of a larger family get-together. I'd be more adventurous like 2nd James, except I won't have enough "self-structured" time to be real creative, and I have others to think about. Besides that, I want to relax.
2J, it sounds like a great deal with your friend's condo. Airline flights are more than that locally, but I'm subscribing to a lot of travel oriented e-bulletins that advertise specials & promos. Hopefully something will pan out.
I've been to Travelzoo, mstar, but haven't followed it enough to know that. Thanks for the recommend!
Song, thanks. Have you been to that GC resort? That's a place I've thought about too, in the future.
Any other sites or sights to recommend, I appreciate 'em all. Thanks.
Tis much more laid back than Cancun, and the scuba diving and snorkeling is some of the best in the world. It's a whole different experience from Cancun. A little more Carribbean in flavor, and less Mexican. And you can still take the ferry over to see Mayan ruins, etc.
Cancun has some problems that Cozumel seems to have happily escaped.... :)-->
My experience is that you go to Cancun once, and then never go back. Cozumel is a place that can be revisited time and time again...
Like others , she mentioned the ruins are a must see
I HIGHLY recommend not missing them since you are going to be right there...
If you are going to be there for the autumnal equinox, the pyramid at Chichen Itza, which is a nearly perfect timepiece, does some interesting things...
even if its not the equinox its worth going
of course I am partial to the Temple of the mstar- - - um...I mean Morningstar in Tulum which all lines up on the solstices.

I agree whole-heartedly. I've been to Cozumel a couple of times now, and I LOVE IT!!! I don't recommend staying at the Reef Club Cozumel though. It's not as nice as some all-inclusives I've stayed at. Although it is right on the beach and makes a great place to snorkel your heart out.
If you really want to stay in Cancun, I recommend Riu Hotels. I stayed at an all-inclulsive in Puerto Vallart almost 2 years ago, and it was the best one so far. Here's a link: http://www.riu.com/index.php
They are kid friendly. The one we went to had a pool especially for the children so that you don't have to be around the spring break attitude if you don't want to. The hotels are beautiful, clean, and the food was very good for an all-inclusive. I think they have on in Playa del Carmen also, which is just a ferry boat ride to Cozumel. It is closer to the Mayan Ruins. If I were to go again, I would go to Playa del Carmen (close to Tulum).

ex10, Cozumel sounds very appealing to me, but this time it's Cancun.
Thanks for the pics, mstar. Both places would be great to see. Hope it's available.

If you go to Tulum you should go snorkling at the park near by, Xal-Ha. I have been there twice. One of the most peaceful places I have ever been to.

I'm not a snorkeler, but I imagine few are until they get there. It's sounding better and better.

If your beloved is wondering whether or not she can still wear a two-piece, tell her to go for it. Just be sure and slather on the sunscreen. ;)-->
