Oops... I knew the 83 wins... and figured the losses as the accountant I used to be... plugging it in with the understanding that the season is 162 games. Ok, that would be 83-79. So, there was a rain out that didn't get made up?
They had a make up against the Giants that would have been played if necessary.
The tiggers sure ended up looking like kitty cats ... unlike their first half. Stilll looking at where they were the last few years, can't feel too bad for them. And they got the pleasure of handing the Yankees their hats ... (or was that Oakland?)
gives hope to all of us... I'm thinking that the layoff hurt the tigers more than they'd like to admit, that and they gave away two games with their errors... but hey... you gotta hand it to the cards! was it their pitching or the tigers bats? who knows... it's the great game! THE... GREAT... GAME!!!!
Overall it was a mess of a series. The Tigers were awful, and the Cardinals not much better. If not for that little 'pest' Eckstein, (great move by the Angels trading him by the way)
The World Series needs fixing. This year was a bore. The last 2 were 4 and out. The best teams rarely make it there due to a playoff system that makes a joke out of the regular season. And noone east of the Mississippi is awake by the end of the game.
My opinion-they REALLY should play weekend games at least during the day. Who's staying home Saturday night to watch a baseball game? And at least there's a little sunshine to compete with the fans in parkas, and players wearing ski masks.

How could you give any more benefit to the teams with the best record? I sorta like it that a team with a great season still has to have enough left to beat the challengers that "back their way in". Unless you go back to just 2 leagues with no divisions, what else would you propose?
I don't feel sorry for the Yankees who spent $195 million to $83 million for Detroit. St Lou spent $89 million. And the Yanks have won the series 27 time I think, compared to 10 for St Louis in second place. In the end, even with home field advantage, those best during the season teams just couldn't pull it off when under the gun. Playoff pressure and over confidence maybe ... that's what makes it good I think.
The World Series needs fixing. This year was a bore. The last 2 were 4 and out.
I agree that this year's series was not exciting at all. However, when Boston won, it was exciting, because of Boston's history. Off the top of my head, I don't remember much about 2003... oh, yeah, Marlins got in the WS because the Cubs folded after the Steve Bartman incident. I seem to remember that the Angels in 2002 was an enjoyable series (but don't recall any details)...
However, 2001 was REALLY a GREAT SERIES. That WAS exciting. And it was more than just Diamondbacks fans who said so back then (though I happen to be a fan and got to go to game 1 at the BOB).
My opinion-they REALLY should play weekend games at least during the day. Who's staying home Saturday night to watch a baseball game? And at least there's a little sunshine to compete with the fans in parkas, and players wearing ski masks.
I'm with you on that... Heck, the WS used to be such a big deal that day games during the week warranted major attention...
Off the top of my head, I don't remember much about 2003... oh, yeah, Marlins got in the WS because the Cubs folded after the Steve Bartman incident.
Once again Rocky, you show your lack of spiritual perception and awareness. Bartman had nothing to do with their loss. It all goes back to that smelly goat. Please Lord, open the cubbies' eyes, that they may see ...
Yeah the Dbacks series was good, and I'm a Yankee fan. The Angels series was also good, in fact more than good. Maybe I spoke too soon as some points, still coming off the disappointment of the series.
Once again Rocky, you show your lack of spiritual perception and awareness. Bartman had nothing to do with their loss. It all goes back to that smelly goat. Please Lord, open the cubbies' eyes, that they may see ...
Rino,
Once again you show your lack of reading comprehension.
...because the Cubs folded after the Steve Bartman incident.
Bartman was a reference point in time. However, had you ACTUALLY READ what I wrote, you would have noticed that the subject of the sentence was The Cubs. The predicate, or verb (what action did the subject take) was FOLDED.
OK, well I was I thought obviously just goofing about the goat, but whether your reference to them folding after the Bartman thing implied the incident was part of the cause of their mental breakdown, or just the point in time ... I still say the greater spiritual truth is the Cubs folded 58 years before that point in time, when they kicked out the goat. They didn't have the fortitude to win, even before they walked on the field. The Bartman incident was just another kick in the cubbies shins from the spirit of the goat.
... I still say the greater spiritual truth is the Cubs folded 58 years before that point in time, when they kicked out the goat.
I suppose, from a superstitious point of view. However, that year (2003) they had a good season, and were doing well in the playoffs until a certain point in time (not from a superstitious way of looking at it) in that year's playoffs.
Of course, their performance since 2003 may support your supposition.
I came to this forum to find out HOW to get out of what I was into...All you're doing is putting me in deeper....If you wanna know anything about the Cubs' curse,I can tell you more than you'll ever know...They SUCK!...That's all you need to know....
How many days 'til pitchers and catchers report?...
I thought it was a rather non-descript World Series,myself...I liked watching the teams in it...I don't care if it's a big market club or big name ballplayers...I wanna see good teams play good baseball...I was hoping for at least one slugfest,or extra-inning affair...The weather was crappy--not balmy October weather, but chilling rainy dark nites....That's bullsh it...I agree with you totally,hiway...Day baseball, weekdays and weekends for the World Series...If you can't get out of work,or they won't let you have it on tv at work, you ain't a true fan,anyway...You need to quit your job...Instead of arguing about prayer and "One nation under God" in public schools,we,as adults should be debating weather or not it should be mandatory or optional to watch the World Series in the class rooms a few afternoons out of the year...I'm telling you, this country's going to hell in a handbasket...

there is definitely something wrong with our scale of values,
while we are at it can we get rid of advertising between every pitch, cartoon curveballs explaining what a pitch is supposed to do, annoying exploding graphics, announcers who act as if we have never heard of baseball and every move being corporately sponsored?

I love those fan trades where players you don't care about, plus a 'prospect', are offered up for a major player. Yeah, the Jays will jump at that deal.

83+79 = 162
change TWO games and they're at .500 at 81 and 81
although they call it four over
whatever --congrats to the Cards
but the damnable thing about this is-Its cold, raining, looming with bad weather and there is no more baseball
110 days until pitchers and catchers report

Indeed 83+79=162
johniam said Cards finished 83-78. Is that not correct?

couldn't they just play the extra two games anyway, for fun?
They could make it like a drinking game ... for every error, everyone on the team does a shot ...and every player drinks a bud every inning ...

I agree with teams having to prove it in the playoffs. There's a reason the NFL has a 'bye' week for the teams with the best records though.
I think the Cards and Tigers played a really weak series that's all.

remember when we used to be allowed to stealthily wear earpieces that ran inside our shirts and to our transistor radios DURING SCHOOL!!???
my teachers let us do that as long as we didn't disrupt class... but TV says NO!
