I rarely go to theaters. (Last time was to see "The Passion".) Sudo and I like to watch movies at home, and the kids rent a couple at our Blockbuster runs. How do you know if they are "direct to video"? Not trying to "defend/justify" my mistake, but asking honestly.
Not a problem, though, really, cause if I screw up, it's just a game, and we can go back to where we left off. No harm done.

Well, if you don't know, it's easy.

If it's a regular movie, its name will be written normally.
If it was direct-to-video, like, say, that recent Doctor Strange movie,

The rule is against sequels to get TO actors that appear in both films. There's no rule against cameos to get to actors that are not in the first movie (ie, even if it were a sequel, it would be okay

Which one was he the sinister man in? Superman, Batman, Spiderman - one of those I saw with my son. May have picked the wrong one.

Voice-acting counts as acting for this thread.
However,
the rule of thumb is the movie aired in theaters at some time,
which means direct-to-video doesn't count.

If it's a regular movie, its name will be written normally.
If it was direct-to-video, like, say, that recent Doctor Strange movie,
it will have "(V)" written after it.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0910865/
And if it was a video-game only, the parentheses will have "(VG)" instead.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0395274/
If there's still any question, look up its wikipedia entry. Even if it's only a "stub",
it should include its release year and whether it was a theater release or whatever.
Please note direct-to-video's excluded more out of obscurity, since distribution's limited
on those. We may not have even HEARD of the movie...
