There's also a little folder with a quotation mark in the bottom right hand corner of the page - if you go to the post you want to quote and click on it, it will automatically put the post in the quote form for you, and put that "originally posted by_____ in there, too.

The 91, 47 and 93 are also the same as the ascii character codes for [ / and ]
Text [/quote[
The # indicates that an ascii character code follows.
Here is a trick some of you may not know.
If you hold down the alt key and then type in the ascii code on the numeric key pad, that character will be displayed -- usually. However, some of them will actually execute when you do that depending on the running app.

You can use a CODE block (like a QUOTE block, except with the word "code") to exactly duplicate characters otherwise unprintable.
Like this:

And there's another way - using "escape codes"

If I knew how to use "escape codes" that what I would have done. What the heck are "escape codes" ?

The way you get a less than sign is
ampersand-lt-semicolon
& lt ; without the spaces
<
For a left bracket, it is
ampersand-pound-91-semicolon
& # 91 ; without the spaces
greater than is gt instead of lt
The copyright symbol is copy instead of lt
©
The right bracket is 93 instead of 91

steve!, why wouldn't I just type those instead of using the codes?

Steve!
If you just type them instead of using the codes, then the brackets don't show up when you are trying to show how to do stuff.
If I try to show how to put a quote on the screen, and type in
using the actual brackets instead of the codes, here's how it comes out:and that doesn't help anyone

Steve!
Or if I use the actual brackets, then I have to do it like this:
[ quote ] and then a quote [ /quote ]
and then tell you "but leave the spaces out between the brackets"
which is a lot of messing around, and not as clear

Steve!
It's the ampersand that indicates an escape code, the # indicates that it is a number.
