"It was a slow day.

And the sun was beating

On the soldiers by the side of the road.

There was a bright light.

A shattering of shop windows

The bomb in the baby carriage

Was wired to the radio."

This could pass for a Cranberries song even though it isn't, is it?

It might, but the melody is completely wrong for them.

I actually considered one of theirs first, but thought nobody would

recognize even their biggest hits.

"It was a slow day.

And the sun was beating

On the soldiers by the side of the road.

There was a bright light.

A shattering of shop windows

The bomb in the baby carriage

Was wired to the radio."

"It was a dry wind

And it swept across the desert

And it curled into the circle of birth.

And the dead sand

Falling on the children

The mothers and the fathers

And the automatic earth."

"It's a turn-around jump shot

It's everybody jump start

It's every generation throws a hero up the pop charts.

Medicine is magical and magical is art"

"And I believe

These are the days of lasers in the jungle,

Lasers in the jungle somewhere.

Staccato signals of constant information-

A loose affiliation of millionaires

And billionaires and baby

These are the days of miracle and wonder.

This is the long distance call.

The way the camera follows us in slo-mo.

The way we look to us all.

The way we look to a distant constellation

That's dying in a corner of the sky.

These are the days of miracle and wonder

And don't cry baby, don't cry

Don't cry."

Ok, different song, same artist.

(I'll name the previous song when the next one is named.)

"A man walks down the street.

It's a street in a strange world.

Maybe it's the Third World.

Maybe it's his first time around.

He doesn't speak the language.

He holds no currency.

He is a foreign man.

He is surrounded by the sound

The sound-

Cattle in the marketplace,

Scatterlings and orphanages.

He looks around, around

He sees angels in the architecture

Spinning in infinity.

He says 'Amen!' and 'Hallelujah!'"

Ok, I know this one.

~Paul Simon ~ Off his Graceland record, "You Can Call Me Al".

I tried to put the video up but I having a bit of trouble with it.

This is indeed that song.

The other song, off the same album, was "Boy in the Bubble."

I dislike hotlinking videos directly into a thread, but I have no problem

with clickable links to them.

Here's the link to the official video.

"You Can Call Me Al."

I walked the world to you, babe

A thousand miles for you

I dried your tears of pain

A millions times to you

I'd sell my soul for you, babe

For money to burn for you

I'd give you all and have none, babe

Just to, just to, just to, to have you hear by me, because

Yeah, you would pretty much have to not be on the planet to have never heard of this one.

More, the next line is:

In the midnight hour she cried more, more, more

"Incense and Peppermints" has a "nothing to win, but nothing to lose" line, but I'm pretty sure that's not this song.

George

You are correct that it's not this song.

"See the stone set in your eyes.

See the thorn twist in your side.

I'll wait for you.

Sleight of hand and twist of fate.

On a bed of nails she makes me wait"

"My hands are tied.

My body bruised, she's got me with

Nothing to win and

Nothing left to lose."

The other lines made it a lot easier for me WordWolf. This is "With or Without You". ~U2~

You come on like a dream, peaches and cream, lips like strawberry wine...

Your Sixteen ~BEATLES~ (Ringo)

In the mornin' you go gunnin' for the man who stole your water

And you fire till he is done in but they catch you at the border

And the mourners are all singin' as they drag you by your feet

But the hangman isn't hangin' and they put you on the street

When you know she's no high climber then you find your only friend

In a room with your two timer, and you're sure you're near the end

Then you love a little wild one, and she brings you only sorrow

All the time you know she's smilin'; you'll be on your knees tomorrow

That first line definitely rang a bell.

The last 2 lines allowed me to keep singing where they left off.

Steely Dan, "Do It Again", I think, is the song title.

"You go back, Jack, do it again. Wheels turnin' round and round."

Donald Fagin expresses surprise that there's still fans out there,

and that there's YOUNGER fans out there. Some music means something

and later generations like it. Sometimes that surprises the musicians.

(I saw a few teenagers when Ian Anderson toured doing a performance

of "Thick as a Brick" and "Thick as a Brick 2" in concert.)
