I've recognized the song from the first quote, and I can sing the first quote.

I can't name the song, though.

Haven't heard it in a while, either.

here's a funky live version. Does David look like the Lion in the Wizard of Oz, or what?

I remember Graham Nash introducing this song at a live concert I was at. He related how strange the song seemed to him when David brought it to them. It became a wildly successful title cut to one of their best albums.
