There actually was a song by the Jackson 5 (You know, back when Michael Jackson was still black and still a dude) called ABC. But I'm sure you know this isn't that song!
123 by Len Barry. Look over the lyrics. Aren't many lines that WOULDN'T be recognized by anyone that's ever heard the song!
1-2-3, oh, that's how elementary it's gonna be
C'mon, let's fall in love, it's easy (it's so easy)
Like takin' candy (like takin' candy) from a baby
A-B-C (A-B-C) fallin' in love with you was easy for me (easy for me)
And you can do it, too, it's easy (it's so easy)
Like takin' candy (like takin' candy) from a baby
Baby, there's nothin' hard about love
Basically, it's as easy as pie
The hard part is livin' without love
Without your love, baby, I would die
[mostly instrumental with (1-2-3) (1-2-3)]
It's easy (it's so easy)
Like takin' candy (like takin' candy) from a baby, yay
One and one are two (one and one are two)
I know you love me and oh,oh, how I love you (how I love you)
Don't try to fight it 'cause it's easy (it's so easy)
Like takin' candy (like takin' candy) from a baby, yay
1-2-3 (1-2-3) oh, that's how elementary it's gonna be (it's gonna be)
Yeah, I was just messin with ya! Just needed a way to work in my "When Michael was still black and still a dude joke"
As far as the artist, I didn't expect anyone to really know that. I only remember it cause it was on one of those K-Tel records they used to advertize a gazillion times a day on TV.
There is more than one - several, in fact, and within the past 10 years. However, I think this particular group, which was well-educated to beging with - used this first but it's also used in a T.S. Elliot poem. Some of the more recent examples I'm referring to are not main-stream songs for the most part, but someone could know them or the groups (you will recognize the groups)...
It's just one of those words that you'd never expect to hear in a song...
OK, since no one else is going to answer, I'm going to just cause I gotta know what other songs have Mephistopheles in the lyrics. It's Wrapped Around Your Finger by the Police.
And don't forget - he's also mentioned in T.S. Elliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats and Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Cats (The Magical Mr. Mistoffelees.)
Each of us has his strong and weak areas in this game. I'm pretty good with 50's to 70's pop, but not so much with later tunes, and C&W ONLY if it's REALLY well-known!

Don't know the title but then I never did like the stones to much. unless it was covered by Flying Burrito brothers also which would make it dead flowers but I think that's another song.

I knew it wasn't the Jackson 5 song - different song.
But in all honesty, I didn't know the artist...
Does it count?

Mephistopheles is not your name
But I know what you’re up to just the same
Bonus Point: Name another song with "Mephistopheles" mentioned in it....

Thank you, Bluzeman!
Curious, eh?
Here you go:
1. "The Devil's Song" by Marcy Playground
2. "Mephistopheles" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra
3. "Get Original" by Black Eyed Peas
4. "Vortex" by Megadeath
4. "She Knows the Devil" by Toto
And don't forget - he's also mentioned in T.S. Elliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats and Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Cats (The Magical Mr. Mistoffelees.)
Okay... my friend - it's your turn!

Wow! That many people managed to work in a word that most people have never heard into a song. Cool!
