Yeah, Lupine one, you're right no smacking needed, it's indeed The Spirit of Radio by those skinny Canadians, Rush. My favorite line from that song is:
But glittering prizes and endless compromises
shatter the illusion of integrity
(You guys should really check out Morphine though. Some really cool jazz-like stuff. "Cure For Pain" is a good place to start.)
Are those lyrics to: "Dance Hall Days" by Wang Chung?

I like that line with the preceeding line,
"One likes to believe in the freedom of music,
but glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity."
A quick indictment of the music industry, and not a new story....
Yes, that's "Dance Hall Days", by Wang Chung.
This song means they're not a "one-hit-wonder", since they had 2 hits.
'Wang Chung', if memory serves, means "perfect pitch", approximately.
I should also point out that the song had to be actually heard on the radio, not just your favorite song on some album. (Of course, anything post-1980 would have to be a BIG hit for me to remember it.)

Don't know the title but then I never did like the stones to much. unless it was covered by Flying Burrito brothers also which would make it dead flowers but I think that's another song.

I five of their CD's at Best Buy...I didn't think it was that obscure!
Another hint:
no guitars, no keyboards..just drums, sax (usually baritone) and a bass-like-intrstrument

Okay, it was "Have a Lucky Day" from Morphine
try this one:
Begin the day with a friendly voice
a companion unobtrusive
play that song that's so elusive
and the magic music
makes your morning mood
not so obscure

I've thought about posting this one myself.
It's "the Spirit of Radio", by Rush.
Was thinking about them just this morning.

Ever hear "Bob and Doug McKenzie" team up with Geddy Lee of Rush
to do "Take Off (to the Great White North)"?

Since I'm seriously sure about that one, I'll put the next one into play.
(Oakspear can just smack me if I missed it somehow.)

Take your baby by the ears

It doesn't matter what I say
As long as sing with inflection
That makes you feel that I'll convey
Some inner truth of vast reflection

Actually, Dance Hall Days was Wang Chung's first hit. Everybody Have Fun Tonight was second, if memory serves.

It doesn't matter what I say
As long as sing with inflection
That makes you feel that I'll convey
Some inner truth of vast reflection
But I've said nothing so far
And I can keep it up as long as it takes
And it don't matter who you are
If I'm doing my job its your resolve that breaks
Think harmonica

"In fact-I don't mean ANY of this-still my confession draws you near...."
"the Hook", by Blues Traveller.
Only song I know offhand that mentions Anne Boleyn. :)
I THINK that's it.

"Shattered" by The Rolling Stones
No question about that one; how about this'un"
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone the song is over, thought I'd something more to say

I can name the artist, but I'll wait and see if someone can produce
the title before my subconscious kicks it up.

Oh,
and yes, it was "Shattered", by the Stones.
If they performed it at 1/2 time, that was just plain funny.

Time, by Pink Floyd. And I believe the album was Dark Side of the Moon.
Oh for sure he’s always missing
And something is never quite right
Ah, but who would want to listen to you
Kissing his existence good night

So what is the protocol here if no one guesses one for a while? Should I give clues?

clues are okay...sometimes these lyrics are a bit too obscure (see the Morphine lyrics on the last page)
