I have to wonder why the wife felt like she had to hide out at her parents' house and change her cell phone number. Perhaps this isn't her husband's first attempt to reconcile with her and he's bordering on stalking now. :D-->
That's only a guess, though. It could be that he's the nicest guy in the world, going to any lengths to win back his wife's heart and that she's so stubborn it would take something this dramatic to get her attention.
ZShot, I don't think you can call the wife a whore when she didn't demand that he spend $17,000 on her, can you? He did this thing on his own.

The thing is though diamonds have only recently came into vogue and it was mostly due to Ad campaigns of the diamond industry.
When I was in need of wedding rings, I went out with my bride to be. We shopped together. If she really wanted to be spending huge amounts of her budget, then I was prepared to go along with it. As it turned out, she was very frugal :-)
I have since had the honor of escorting a couple sailors who were intent on purchasing wedding rings to propose with. After first looking through catalogs, then a couple jewlery stores [keeping note of carat weight, purity of gold, weight of gold, and price], we then went to pawn-shops. If a pawn-shop has an ultra-sonic cleaner, those weddings ring sets will be far cheaper for the same carat wieght, purity and weight of gold.
Not saying that you want to be cheap, and you certainly want to stay away from anything fake. But the jewelry industry does have a lot of mark-up. Buying used is often a much better deal. Spend a couple grand for an item that goes for 5-times as much in name-brand stores.
That "three months salary" stuff is nothing more than an advertising campaign created by DeBeers, a company that controls almost all of the world's diamond production.
They also came up with slogan "Diamonds are Forever" and supposedly they are responsible for coming up with the whole idea of the diamond engagement ring.
Yeah,diamonds are forever....even if they end up in a pawn shop 6 months later...
You know, Pirate/Galen....I thought the same thing as far as the diamond industry setting their ad campaigns to get people to spend lots of money,usually which they don't have,on something to me which seems utterly overpriced and practically useless...I mean,if a JEWELER needs a magnifying lupe,or whatever it's called,to tell if a piece of jewelry is real or faux,just how much more beautiful can the damn thing be to the naked eye of the average layperson than a fake one?...Frankly I'm more impressed with those guys that write the Lord's Prayer on a grain of rice....I just don't see how something so small can be so expensive and people feeling so compelled to spend so much money on them....
I liked the Old Testament customs better where you gave the bride's father a couple of bovines and maybe a bushel of gourds....Then you could go to her folks' house every night for dinner until the beeves run out....
Well I suppose if 5 dozen roses did not do the trick-actually I run up against stalker/werido types all the time- whatever it was to make her bail after 17 years...musta been amazing.
There was a time when I think I would have killed for words like that in the ad! But I wonder....maybe nothing is really so bad that she left him....unless it was the same thing 150 thousand times...and just this once she's not going to fall for it....again.
If her parents live in a gated community then they could have been putting all kinds of pressure on her to dump him for whatever reason.
She cried? 17 years? Yeah, she'll at least give it some thought.
This reminds me of that scene in the movie 'Parenthood' when Rick Moranis's wife, a teacher, leaves him and he comes right to her class in front of all the students and sings "Close to you" to her.

I think that this 'gesture' was only partly to get his wife back.
I think the true alternative goal was to fill a little black book with names of girls who want to take his mind off of her.
Likely well worth the money in investment terms, too.
