Hi Excath! Thanks for the howdy...I have been in the process of moving from my small town of Haines, AK to the "big city" of Juneau, and am now finally back on line again...And, wow, you got to say it too! Now I want to say it:
....
I feel better now...Haha!
and..P.S.
That mention of Juneau supposedly being seond only to SF in gay population was a "percapita" thing, in that Juneau is only 30,000 people or so...
If I worked for a corporation where I was forced to take a diversity class, meaning they decided to equate homosexuality with race, then I consider this indoctrination, an intrusion into my religious perspective, and request the company I be excluded from such a class.
If they said I had to take it or it was my job, and I am forced to take, and mind you, accept (that is the idea of the class) this gender-bending sexuality scenario, then it is an area where the issue of sexuality, and therefore sex, is being forced on me against my will by threatening my job. I would then sue the corporation and cite sexual harassment as one of the charges. I know some attorneys who feel the same, and they are biting for some money.
Trouble here is, almost no one sues.
I do not believe corporations should be in the business of teaching morals or "counter" morality.
Fortunately, I work for a company that promotes REAL tolerance and respects the rights of people to believe what they believe. If something is overtly offensive, it is shut down. But things such as Christmas, Hannakah, Ramadan and even Kwanssa are allowed to be discussed and employees may post what they will in their own office space.
I believe my corporation leaves sexuality to families and churches. Diversity at our place means diversity of ideas. Race, gender, and sexuality have nothing to do with it and are a waste of time.
If an employee doesn't like Christmas or Easter posters in the company, the employee that doesn't like them does not rule and they do not tear down everyone else's individual posters or company posters. That employee is advised to tolerate the opinions of their fellow employees on their religion which is expressed only by their posters and the employee has to respect the right of the employer to celebrate Christmas or whatever holiday.
We have some gays working there and everyone understands we have to work together with them. No one brings up their sexuality. We let it alone so much as those that are gays don't try to bring it up as an issue in the workplace.
As far as lesbians vs gay men, I did not notice or have any idea that one group was accepted more than the other in some areas. Never thought on it or had it come to mind.
The company has made over $400 million in profits in five years.
When I was working for Allstate Insurance, I went through a diversity seminar.
It's not at all like you think.
The main theme was the platinum rule - treat other people the way they would have you treat them.
A subtheme was: you are free to think whatever the hell you want to think, but you need to keep many of your opinions to yourself. For example, if you are racially biased against African Americans, that needs to not come out in your conversations and dealings with any other employee.
In the Navy I have had to attend numerous courses on 'Sexual Herassment'. None focused on racial stuff though.
I have undergone training on "dont ask, dont tell" policy: so long as nobody asks about whether you are doing X felony; So long as nobody volunteers information that they are committing a felony of X topic; then we can not prosecute you. But that still means that if you get CAUGHT doing X felony, you will be prosecuted.
:-)
As a foster-parent I have had to attend courses presented by the Rainbow-Coalition. It was on 'GLBT' [Gay-Lesbian-Bisexual-Transsexual] tolerance. And how X percentage of the population is going to be either of those varietys, or all of those varietys, and how we as foster-parents are required to 'encourage' and 'nurture' children into becoming all they can become. Had to sign a statement to the lines of agreeing that I would keep my opinions on fags away from the foster-children.
Now wait just a dog gone minute! I thought ORLANDO was 2nd only to SF in the homosexual population! They do have Disney there, ya know. ;)-->
Also, it's close to Ft Lauderdale, which is supposed to be a close 3rd and 1st as far as the Leather and BDSM community. In fact the city is called Ft Leatherman by many "insiders".

Thanks, you guys, for helping me make a career decision.
I am so done with being a decorator, I'm going back to designing custom homes. More bucks and ya don't have to deal with the public stereotypes. :)-->

Sexual orientation was never mentioned once.
