Yup --- wanted to get an idea of the melody, so I hauled out "Mr. Martin", and strummed along. It would be a good one for the banjo too (I'm trying the song on it next!) :)-->
"Atlantis" by Donovan --- now you're taking me back where I wanna be. Haven't heard that song since I don't know when.
Short story --- I went to a parochial school, and Sister Regina Marie was my music teacher. She taught me piano, and bass, and in the 7th grade she took myself and a coupla others over to the church, and showed us how to play the pipe organ they had there, so we could play for the mass that was held each day before school was held.
I went to that school though the 8th grade, but kept in contact with her afterwards. She gave me unlimited access to the choir loft, and the organ (the church was unlocked in those days -- but the choir loft and the organ were not), reminding me only that I was to turn the organ off when I was done.
I used to play Atlantis (among other tunes) on that thing (three keyboards, pedals, huge bank of pipes on the wall, etc.) with all the "swell" I could get out of it, and filled that church with some really righteous notes -- and the acoustics were pretty awesome -- so it wasn't hard to get lost in what I was doing, and keeping track of time meant nothing -- I was there for hours at a stretch.
I started going there *after-hours* before I even had a car (the church was 2 miles from my house -- and within easy bicycling distance). I always figured I was the only one there -- but many a night, after I would lock up, I'd go to my bicycle and find a note of gratitude from some IU student (this was in Bloomington, Indiana) that had been in there that night seeking whatever personal solace they were looking for, and found the music "inspiring".
Does anybody remember his Intergalactic Laxative album/single? Had "Season of the Witch", "I Like You", "Intergalactic Laxative (it makes you $h*t and pee)" and some others of his not-so-well-known-but-truly-great works.
Dave, I requested Adam Sandler's song on our oldies station during Hanukkah when they asked for requests of songs performed by Jewish singers. Alas, it wasn't old enough and they didn't have it. I get such a kick out of that song.
They did play "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" by Neil Diamond and "Goin' Down to Stony Ridge" by Barbra Streisand. I would have preferred Adam's Hanukkah song.
CW, I had a big crush on Donovan, too. I reviewed a concert he did at the Hollywood Bowl in 1967 or 68, and it was certainly one of my most exciting assignments! I was damn near swooning.
I actually used the word "groovy" in print in that story. I'm STILL embarrassed.

Donovan - Atlantis Lyrics
The continent of Atlantis was an island which lay before the
great flood
in the area we now call the Atlantic Ocean.
So great an area of land, that from her western shores
those beautiful sailors journeyed to the South and the North
Americas with ease,
in their ships with painted sails.
To the East Africa was a neighbour, across a short strait of sea
miles.
The great Egyptian age is but a remnant of The Atlantian
culture.
The antediluvian kings colonised the world
All the Gods who play in the mythological dramas
In all legends from all lands were from fair Atlantis.
Knowing her fate, Atlantis sent out ships to all corners of the
Earth.
On board were the Twelve:
The poet, the physician, the farmer, the scientist,
The magician and the other so-called Gods of our legends.
Though Gods they were -
And as the elders of our time choose to remain blind
Let us rejoice and let us sing and dance and ring in the new
Hail Atlantis!
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be,
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be,
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be.
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be,
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be.
My antediluvian baby, oh yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah,
I wanna see you some day
My antediluvian baby, oh yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah,
My antediluvian baby,
My antediluvian baby, I love you, girl,
Girl, I wanna see you some day.
My antediluvian baby, oh yeah
I wanna see you some day, oh
My antediluvian baby.
My antediluvian baby, I wanna see you
My antediluvian baby, gotta tell me where she gone
I wanna see you some day
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, oh yeah
Oh glub glub, down down, yeah
My antediluvian baby, oh yeah yeah yeah yeah

UH --- the folks I work with all prefer the "oldies" station on the radio. Think I'll request that tune when I go into work, today! :)-->
(I can't quit humming it either!) ;)-->

Thanks, Bluzeman. That song makes me smile.
I still have some Donovan vinyl around. I'll have to dig it out over the long weekend.
