"The Twelve Pains of Christmas" gets a little airtime on the oldies station here. I think it's my favorite, too, although "Walking in Women's Underwear" (to the tune of "Winter Wonderland") is close.
Celtic arrangements play here always, all year round...even the Christmas ones...lol.
...and hearsone for fun:
the Christmas LP (released on tape and CD now) by Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians...it's theone with the Norman Rockwell picture of two kids asleep in a wingback chair with Santa peering out from behind.......a fun, festive, from the fifties rendition of Christmas favorites.
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen was first published in 1833 when it appeared in "Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern," a collection of seasonal carols gathered by William B. Sandys. The lyrics of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen are traditional olde English and are reputed to date back to the 15th century although the author is unknown.. It is believed that this particular carol was sung to the gentry by town watchmen who earned additional money during the Christmas season. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen : Lyrics
God rest ye merry, gentlemen
Let nothing you dismay
Remember, Christ, our Saviour
Was born on Christmas day
To save us all from Satan's power
When we were gone astray
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy
In Bethlehem, in Israel,
This blessed Babe was born
And laid within a manger
Upon this blessed morn
The which His Mother Mary
Did nothing take in scorn
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy
From God our Heavenly Father
A blessed Angel came;
And unto certain Shepherds
Brought tidings of the same:
How that in Bethlehem was born
The Son of God by Name.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy
"Fear not then," said the Angel,
"Let nothing you affright,
This day is born a Saviour
Of a pure Virgin bright,
To free all those who trust in Him
From Satan's power and might."
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy
The shepherds at those tidings
Rejoiced much in mind,
And left their flocks a-feeding
In tempest, storm and wind:
And went to Bethlehem straightway
The Son of God to find.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy
And when they came to Bethlehem
Where our dear Saviour lay,
They found Him in a manger,
Where oxen feed on hay;
His Mother Mary kneeling down,
Unto the Lord did pray.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy
Now to the Lord sing praises,
All you within this place,
And with true love and brotherhood
Each other now embrace;
This holy tide of Christmas
All other doth deface.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
This song has a little history the reason one of my favs.
There were about 15 of us caroling in the Historic district of Savannah, Ga in '84. It was a cold night.
There was a well lit tree sparkling behind large windows. We trouped up the stairs to this front door real quiet and positioned our selfs from the top landing and down the stairs. The song leader held his hands up and we hmmmmmmed together and began the lyrics.
The Charleston Green with a northern winter wreathed door opened. A young lady embracing a baby, a young man; another couple of grandparent stature stood in the opening with wonderfull smiles 'pon their faces and huddled close.
The young lady with the baby had tears a mirror to her eyes. She blinked with a smile and released a tear 'pon each cheek which dropped onto the babe cradled in her arms.
The babe was awake and seemed quite content.
When the lyrics were done, our audience lightly appluaded.
The young lady handed the baby to the young man and smoothed her hands over each eye and said:
..."Thank you so very much for that song. We (she gestured to the young man with the quite content awake babe) have just moved here from Maine and that was my Grandfather's favorite Christmas Carol..."
We all had a few bat the chat and sang em one more, bid good night, and sang on down the stairs.
That is a cherished memory I have remembered every Christmas since then.
And that is why that CHRISTMAS Song became one of my favs.

I just love "Let it Be Christmas" by Alan Jackson, I'm learning this one on my mandolin!
Let it be Christmas everywhere
In the hearts of all people both near and afar
Christmas everywhere
Feel the love of the season wherever you are
On the small country roads lined with green mistletoe
Big city streets where a thousand lights glow
Let it be Christmas everywhere
Let heavenly music fill the air
Let every heart sing let every bell ring
The story of hope and joy and peace
And let it be Christmas everywhere
Let heavenly music fill the air
Let anger and fear and hate disappear
Let there be love that lasts through the year
And let it be Christmas
Christmas everywhere
Let it be Christmas everywhere
With the gold and the silver, the green and the red
Christmas everywhere
In the smiles of all children asleep in their beds
In the eyes of young babies their first fallen snow
Elderlys' memories that never grow old
Let it be Christmas everywhere
Let heavenly music fill the air
Let every heart sing let every bell ring
The story of hope and joy and peace
And let it be Christmas everywhere
Let heavenly music fill the air
Let anger and fear and hate disappear
Let there be love that lasts through the year
And let it be Christmas
Christmas everywhere
Let it be Christmas everywhere
In the songs that we sing and the gifts that we bring
Christmas everywhere
In what this day means and what we believe
From the sandy white beaches where blue water rolls
Snow covered mountains and valleys below
Let it be Christmas everywhere
Let heavenly music fill the air
Let every heart sing let every bell ring
The story of hope and joy and peace
And let it be Christmas everywhere
Let heavenly music fill the air
Let anger and fear and hate disappear
Let there be love that lasts through the year
And let it be Christmas
Christmas everywhere
Christmas everywhere
Christmas everywhere

I have to admit I have sort a a twisted outlook when it comes to Christmas Songs.
"Grandma Got Run Over by A reindeer"
"Chipmunks Roastin on an Open Fire" (Bob Rivers)
"There's another Santa Claus" - Bob Rivers
In fact most of the Bob Rivers Collection.
And "Twelve Days of Christmas" as performed by Allen Sherman of "Hello Mudda, Hello Fadda" fame.
If you go un-twisted - then it's "Frosty the Snowman", "Rudolph" and my all time favorite "White Christmas"
Near Hits "Jingle Bell Rock" "Little Drummer Boy".
I think TWI sort of ruined the religious ones for me. But if they're sung well and have good harmonies I enjoy listening to them.

Keith,
How about the Mackenzie (sp?) brothers? They're funny, eh?
I can't remember all of them, but it had a lot to do with beer to the tune of the 12 days of Christmas.

I haven't heard this one in years, but I used to love it when I was a kid, which was a long time ago.
I broke my bat on Johnny's head;
Somebody snitched on me.
I hid a frog in sister's bed;
Somebody snitched on me.
I spilled some ink on Mommy's rug;
I made Tommy eat a bug;
Bought some gum with a penny slug;
Somebody snitched on me.
Oh, I'm gettin' nuttin' for Christmas
Mommy and Daddy are mad.
I'm getting nuttin' for Christmas
'Cause I ain't been nuttin' but bad.
I put a tack on teacher's chair
somebody snitched on me.
I tied a knot in Susie's hair
somebody snitched on me.
I did a dance on Mommy's plants
climbed a tree and tore my pants
Filled the sugar bowl with ants
somebody snitched on me.
So, I'm gettin' nuttin' for Christmas
Mommy and Daddy are mad.
I'm gettin' nuttin' for Christmas
'Cause I ain't been nuttin' but bad.
I won't be seeing Santa Claus;
Somebody snitched on me.
He won't come visit me because
Somebody snitched on me.
Next year I'll be going straight;
Next year I'll be good, just wait
I'd start now, but it's too late;
Somebody snitched on me.
So you better be good whatever you do
'Cause if you're bad, I'm warning you,
You'll get nuttin' for Christmas.

a favorite of mine -- sung by so many -- i think i love karen carpenter's the best. or perhaps judy garland. or anyone really.
but this is for you all here --
Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Let your heart be light
From now on,
our troubles will be out of sight
Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Make the Yule-tide gay,
From now on,
our troubles will be miles away.
Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore.
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.
Through the years
We all will be together,
If the Fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough.
And have yourself A merry little Christmas now.
