Alice is Alice Brock who ran the restaurant with her husband Ray--She's still about in my neck of the woods. She and Ray were teachers at the local school where Arlo and a bunch of the Hippie kids went. When they started the restaurant the kids all pitched into help and Arlo's contribution (not being real swift with hammer and nails) was a singing commercial out of which developed the song we all know now--That's Alice
Weird true thing happened this morning--at my girlfriends house in the songs town of Stockbridge this Thanksgiving morning we were cleaning and getting ready for the big dinner today and I asked her what else was there to do. And when she innocently suggested a DUMP run (to the Stockbridge Town Dump) I only could laugh and laugh, how many Thanksgiving mornings in any life are you going to be asked to recreate a famous song?
anyway----sometimes things are inadvertently just a little too surreal..
O thanksgiving songs, you asked about song--heres one I have always liked by a folksinger named Harvey Reidnot well known but good nonetheless, only one I cabn think of at the moment...
Happy Thanksgiving
Gathering the Harvest
It's a time to give thanks to bow our heads down
The beggar for his bread, the king for his crown
The weary for shelter from the night and the storm
The fool for the wisdom, the rose for the thorn
Let us pray for peace, let our children smile
Let us grow let us prosper, let us love all the while
We give thanks to creation for the good earth we plow
It's the time for the harvest and we're gathering it now
The woodcutter's home is made from the tree
The tear of the sailor, it tastes like the sea
The face of the plowman, as brown as the land
The clay we're all made from was shaped by His hand
Come soldier, come sister, come innocent child
Come shepherd from the mountain, let us all rest awhile
'Tis the season for counting the blessings we ve known
We re gathering the harvest from the seeds we have sown
Been a member of the "CHURCH" for many years. Never did make it for the annual gathering though, always say maybe next year. Got a lot of fond memories of the era, I watch the movie and listen to the record every year, Rollinganotherone.
:D--> Since Ive heard the song before I assumed that it was---never made it to the dump, but for good measure I drove by Arlo's church where they were having a big Thanksgiving dinner that couldn't be beat...
sure--come on up any old time, its beautiful country up here---we can not only go to the restaurant (well..its called Theresas now), but the dump, the church, the police officer station and do a tour of the whole massacree-- we could time an Arlo concert in with that if we tried.

Uh,
it's available on tape and CD....
"Arlo Guthrie, "Alice's Restaurant" ".
If you listen to the tape, it's all of side
one, titled "Alice's Restaurant Massacree."
They also made a movie of it,
as was mentioned earlier in the thread.

Happy thanksgiving everyone!
i'll be spending this one right at Arlo's place--
Yes- The very same place in the song
Arlo does a big thankgiving Dinner "that cant be beat" every year--plays the song live---and just opens up to the community for a general good time.
If you're one of those people who listens to the song every Thanksgiving like I do
There I''ll be
