I liked 'Where the Action is" more than American Bandstand, which always seemed to be kinda old hat and 'stuffy' for lack of a better word. Doing a dance show designed for the 50's into the 80's didn't always work-but I watched it whenever I was home on Saturday, so something kept me coming back. Oh right-the girls
'Where the Action Is' was more fun. I remember Paul Revere and the Raiders (with Mark Lindsay) being the 'regular' band, and often playing poolside with cavorting teens in bikinis. sigh The show basically moved bandstand outside, with more energy and fun.
I'm sure I saw 'Happening' too-it may have been a follow up show to Where the Action Is.
Hullabaloo was more of a top40 show, with lots of dancers and 'bubble gum' type performers.
Shindig was much more involved with the real music. Performers from Dylan, to the Stones performing on a simple stage with a darkened audience. It had it's share of 'bubble gum' too, but was a remarkable venue for the performers that REALLY scared our parents.
If there aren't dvd sets of those 2 shows already, there should be.
Oh my! I loved those shows. Oh the memories are just flooding back. In fact I was partway thru reading after peeking thru all of it and had to stop to thank you for this awesome link. :)
I started to write down things I saw that caught my eye and brought back sounds and heck even a few smells (hahaha) but then I realized it would look like the link so decided to just say I'm gone again to read some more.
Both dealing with subject at hand. Do they sound familiar? Here's number uno.. click HERE! My favorite is the next one, though. The show wasn't on that long but I'm wondering if the theme song isn't even MORE familiar? Click HERE!

that was some wild show, Tom.
The star's career took quite a nosedive when he was caught doing bad things in a bad movie theater
not what you'd want in a kid's show host

He was 'Jambi the Genie' and he'd grant your wish with the words "Mecca-lecca-hi, mecca-hiney-ho".
Other friends were 'Chairy' and 'Conky' (seen here):

There were some other "summer" shows by Dick Clark. One was Where the Action is and the other was Happening '68 which became Happening the 2nd year.
The Happening theme was performed by the band that the two cohosts were in.

Hey, man. I really dug "Where the Action Is." But let's not forget the groovy "Hullabaloo" and "Shindig."

Oh little talking doll... I'll even bet that you thought that song was "innocent" didn't you?

Oh never did I think it was innocent, which is why I blushed. :)
I loved this one also. The Lovin' Spoonful: "You Didn't Have To Be So Nice"
I could spend hours on this dadgum page. I bookmarked it because I really should do something else I'm certain.

Where the Action Is-that was the Dave Clark 5 wasn't it?
I remember buying a teen rag in '64 called 'Dave Clark5 vs the Beatles'
I wonder who won?

I remember buying something like that as well. It basically claimed that the DC5 would blow away the Beatles. Didn't work out quite that way.
