Of course, Bobby Darin is most famous for that song, and Louis Armstrong had a hit with it, too. Ella actually forgot some of the words and was making up lyrics on the fly: "Bobby and Louis made a record; Ella and her fellas made a wreck!"
I'm trying to get your attention.. here's some of what you requested.. Porgy and Bess stuff. I've even got the Buzzard Song but first.. you've gots to take a stab at who did these versions. Click 1) HERE! and 2) HERE! and 3) HERE! A very diverse group doing a Porgy and Bess number.
The 2nd one is by a Rock and Roll outfit and the 3rd one is by an American Communist. That's all the hints for now. :)
Well, the first one is Peggy Lee. Will have to listen to the second one a little closer, but I think I know who it is. Haven't listened to the third one yet, and I'm on my way out the door to pick up my new laptop. (YAY!)
I don't understand what Kathy is confused about. The show, obviously, is the Mary Tyler Moore Show. The singers of this version appear when I open the link, so Joan Jett isn't a secret either.
I'll be on vacation for a week. Try not to miss me TOO much!
It wasn't a complete give-away.. it didn't say Mary Tyler Moore anyplace. I guess you could have Googled the lyrics. I remember thinking that Mary was just starting to show her age here. She wasn't quite the fox she was on the Dick Van Dyke show. Anyone else remember it that way?
Agree, Sudo. Especiallly considering that it was only four years-almost to the day-between the end of Dick Van Dyke and the beginning of The Mary Tyler Moore show.
Maybe it's the difference between black & white and color.
Great pics as examples! I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who noticed. Funny thing is that back when the Dick Van Dyke show was running I didn't think about MTM being so foxy.. I was in elementary school at the time and she was just another grown up to me. It was in the re-runs that I, uh, saw things in a different light. She always wore those tight fitting slacks too when all the other TV moms were wearing dowdy dresses. Ummmm..
Wanna' feel old?? She turns 70 years old in December.
I must point out that the pic of MTM from her own series was taken late in it's run, so it was over 10 years later, not 4.
In the first season of her own show, she looked much like she did on the Dick Van Dyke show, but with longer, fuller, hair.
Funny, she was every young boys dream when DVD was on in my neighborhood, with her good looks, tight pants, and personality.
Also, the earlier picture was a posed photographers shot, designed to look great, while the latter picture is a screen capture from an episode. A world of difference.
You took a pass on the Ain't Necessarily So tunes. Bluzeman knew the first one was Peggy Lee, wasn't positive about the 2nd and hadn't listened to the American Communist who did the 3rd. Click HERE!

This is my favorite Ella song. Oddly, it was her only Top 40 hit.

That is one of my fathers favorite. Which when I was younger had to learn and play for him on the organ.
Later I found a karokee version and would sing it to him from time to time. I like this arrangement. She swings. Her scatting is great.
Thanks for sharing this George

SaintGeorge,
I can't think of that song without thinking of someone else that did it. Best ever done, but you'll not find it on a record anywhere.
Thank you for that version, quite a great one there.

The reason it's called scat is, it's VERY closely related to animal scat.

All wonderful versions, though I can't place any of the voices. The last might be William Warfield, but I don't know about his being a Communist.
I'm disappointed that none of the versions included my favorite verse:
Methuselah lived 900 years.
Methuselah lived 900 years.
But who calls that livin'
When no gal would give in
To no man what's 900 years.

I'm having a brain fart. I know it and can't remember.
I want to say it's related to a cat in the closing. But I can't think of the series.

I forget who sings the remake there, but it works for me.
C'mon Kathy, you're gonna kick yourself when it comes to you.

Yes, I see MTM in downtown somewhere in the NE area throwing up a hat. But for the life of me can't think of the name.

Can't name the person there, Sudo, but I'm sincerely hoping to avoid a debate on whether he was a Communist or not.

MTM was adorable. I read she was only allowed to wear pants so many episodes. Haven't times changed. :)
I use to think they over flustered her but I liked her character, she was fun and seemed full of life.
Play nice here.
I'm very glad it'is Friday night.
