I ask this because I have a friend that has always been a critic of Gov. overspending especially the waste in the military. Just so happens he got a high paid job for a military supplier and does nearly nothing all day and he laughs about it all the way to the bank.
But...his company is about to loose the contract and it will mean a loss of his job. Suddenly he is not so thrifty with gov. spending and want's to keep his high pay, no work job.
He is still patriotic but he blames Clinton for cutting back on defence suppliers. Hmmmm...Isn't GWB in office now?
I have seen that many times the 'first' contractor to provide a service does manage to get way more money than seems reasonable for what services they offer. But when that contract is up, then everything goes to an open bid. Which is when any company can jump in there and low-bid, which saves the nation money.
It is true that at times, some companys do charge crazy fees for items or services, with ethics guidelines in place and watch-dog groups and IG inspections, these slowly are removed.
It does sound like your friend is 'happy' to have been on the recieving end of the good money for a while.
I dont see what any of this has to do with 'patriotism'.
To me 'patriotism' is volunteering to help the country, or enlisting to be a servicemember.
Otherwise it is just a job. Jobs come and go. He should be happy that he knowingly had an over-paid job for a short while. There are people who will never be in that position. I wold hope that he made good use of that level of income and invested while he could.
I have seen many who knew ahead of time, that they were going to get showered with money, and knew that the extra money was not going to last very long. In the cases that I have known, they each went out and drank that extra money, or gave it to a girl-friend; so when it did run out, they were jsut as broke as if they had never gotten the big bonuses.
Hmm, a 'fellow' and his money getting soon seperated, is that it?
He is a very fine person and did invest his income wisely. He is also very thankful for the job.
But the company is very old and outdated. Another is much better suited for the contract. The fight is for their jobs not for what is best for the country and the tax payer. And because of the product they are all extreemely patriotic.

I agree. I got in a discussion with someone a while back about *patriotism* and oil. They maintained it was more patriotic to stop driving suv's and other big vehicles than it was to drill for oil in Alaska.
I don't see either as being *patriotic*, but drilling for oil in Alaska makes sense to me, and actually could be labeled *patriotic*, since it would lessen dependance on foreign countries.
Other than that I don't see his job (or loss thereof), or other jobs as being patriotic. If the low bidder gets the contract -- that is just good business sense.
IMO, most contractors that have a contract with the government are like "pampers"...
They are disposible and usually full of $h!t...
I thought I started a thread amout this a few weeks ago...
There is nothing patrotic about government contracts. It's simply business.
BB,
Your friend will only lose his job if his company lays him off. He might be able to get hired by the company that got awarded the contract (of course he would lose any senority and might have to take a salery cut).
As far as patorism goes...
I was in the Army and Army Reserves for over 20 years (and am now retired).
For a job...
I am a Department of Defense Civillian employee who works on an Army installation in a budget office.
I ask this because I have a friend that has always been a critic of Gov. overspending especially the waste in the military. Just so happens he got a high paid job for a military supplier and does nearly nothing all day and he laughs about it all the way to the bank.
This guy is just plain full of sh!t.
He's against overspending when it's a far off concept, but he's willing to shove it up the taxpayers butt if he benefits?
He is one of 'them'. He talks a good game, but when the rubber meets the road his true views come out. I wouldn't take his politics or views on much (if anything) seriously for quite a while....
....and I dont know what you mean by Patriotic, we must have different definitions of Patriotism because I don't see anything patriotic about this man or his company. They are capitalists and profiteers, patriotism doesn't enter into the mix.
..and just so you know yes I have quit government jobs where I was overpaid for doing work that didn't need to be done, and turned down fat government contracts offered to me that were nothing more than well manipulated profit making scams.
There is a limit to what I will and won't do for the government. My soul is worth more than all their money and I like to keep it intact

These bright posters have pretty much summed it up for me. I was reading your initial post and thinking, "what the heck does this have to do with patriotism?"
So the guy had a nice ride. I hope he enjoyed it. He has no room to complain, imo. Some other company just played the game better and now he might have to pick up his toys and go home. We're supposed to feel sorry for him? --> We're supposed to consider him patriotic? -->
How is he giving up his entire lifestyle? He will either get laid off or not. It's not like he is the one making the decision if he's laid off. If the company can compete and come back with better quality and better prices then they wouldn't lose the business. Sounds like you and your friend are saying that ripping the government off by selling them inferior products at expensive prices is patriotic. --> Maybe I'm reading your post wrong, but *shrug* he isn't "agreeing to give the work to another company", he lost the bid and the government contract and now he's bitter about it.

Masters of War - Bob Dylan
Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks
You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly
Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain
You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud
You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins
How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do
Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul
And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead
