Right. I read an NYT article last month that quoted a Google rep explaining how they would do it. Same info that’s in your CNN article. I should have stipulated this.
I’m just curious. How do the maps ACTUALLY read to those outside the U.S.? Which place name is in parentheses, etc.?
I'm not posting from inside the US, which is why I expect I was asked. In my search, it's clearly "Gulf of Mexico." When I do a search specifically for "Gulf of America", I get the exact same image, which includes the name "Gulf of Mexico" right on the map, and the description says "Gulf of Mexico."
here in Australia google comes up with..... Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America) in that order. I'll go by what the current administration has renamed it....Gulf of America.
Would that be a Mexican standoff or an American standoff?
Five-senses beleeving or spiritual beleeving?
Doctor "taught" the Corps in the class on Romans that you can lie, steal, cheat and rape, and it only matters if you beleeve it does. Well, he actually "taught" that kernel directly TO Loy Craig Martindale by reproof and correction. But that tremendous, matchless truth is FOR our learning.
It's like a duck. You know what a duck is, dontcha? Dat's riiight.
If there's no good reason to change a name of centuries, why bother?
Ah, says an orangeman, there is good reason. My ego!
TBH if it were called Gulf of THE Americas, that would be understandable and maybe acceptable. The area is bounded by the continent of North America and the isthmus of Central America; and South America forms a southern boundary though arguably not exactly on the gult. The lengths of the Mexican border and the north American border appear to be about the same.
But no. The orangeman thinks America means the whole of the continent of North America (sorry, Canadians). And sharing with other parts of "America" (ie, Central and South) just isn't in the playbook.
It's likely the rest of the world with stick with Gulf of Mexico and the name will revert back in a few years' time.
I don’t live too far from the Gulf and have spent quite a bit of time fishing it and playing on its beaches. I don’t know think I could ever call it anything other than its name.
It’s one of those “I wish you could read it in the original” kind of things.
I think we should call it the Gulf of Clem. No particular reason. I just think it sounds cool.
My granddaughter Clara Belle (That's short for Helen) said "Golly, Grandpa Waysider, that's a groovy idea.")
Both cool and groovy - that would be like you and Helen enjoying your right to freedom of speech.
Not cool and groovy - an international news organization being penalized for calling it the Gulf of Mexico since that's how it's known everywhere else in the world.
If there's no good reason to change a name of centuries, why bother?

I know people forget this little detail, but North America is 3 countries, Canada, the United States and Mexico. (With DVDs, that's Region 1, and the reason Region 1 DVDs often include English and Spanish and French, but rarely other languages.)

From what I've been seeing on UK news Twinks, many, many Britons would happily swap the 'orange man' for that sack of oatmeal mush, Keir Starmer...Farage 2026 !!

Nobody I know would agree with you, Allan. Starmer isn't very popular, Badenoch (other main party leader) even less so, Farage (fancies himself as orangeman's best buddy) is an extremist far right fool and not at all well thought of - but the orangeman is nationally hated.

From Canada:
The above map was not a google map. The following is (love the brackets!)

I got curious and searched for my own address. Along with the map and a shocking street view photo, My search prompted THIS happy little tune.
Ahh, the memories.

Thanks to all for playing along.
Charity, I thought you were in Canada. I was expecting to see Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).
Word Wolf, I suspected you were in Latin America and expected to see the name I will forever use.
And Waysider, thank you for the pun by way of some esoteric Americana. I expected nothing less!

Thanks, Allan. The current administration will be pleased.
Really, it interprets itself, whatever one calls it.

Suppose we got the German auto industry involved and called it The Gulf of Golf.
