A nine-year-old orphaned by the attack on the World Trade Center searches for the lock that matches a mysterious key left behind by his father. His search leads him to answers to much larger questions at Devil's Tower in Wyoming.
A bank executive pulls off a multi-million dollar heist, only to be cased by a sexy insurance investigator. He promises to meet her in six months atop the Empire State Building, where he will reveal all.
A radio shock-jock, suicidally despondent because of a terrible mistake he made, finds redemption in helping a deranged homeless man who was an unwitting victim of that mistake. That man turns his own life around, and works at a nightclub, first as a busboy then as a singer.

Ok. It's got a lot of detail, so I was confused at first. It sounds like 3 movies or shows because "Big Trouble in Little China" is that kind of movie. While humming the theme song, I was eventual

I'm pretty sure I know the second half, but the first isn't familiar to me.

Think of the first word of the second movie.
Not a lot of movies with that word at the end of their title.
This is a recent movie that was nominated for Best Picture, so as obscure as it was, it was not SO obscure as to be inadmissible for our game. ;)

*looks it up*
I guarantee I have not heard of this until just now.
Mostly, when I have time now, and I watch movies,
I'm watching movies that have been out for a few years
or a few decades. And I am NOT connected to the same
culture as closely as I was.
(I don't overhear about new movies over the radio
or things like that any more.)

The sounds are deafening. The action took place so near to me that I could touch it. And it culminated at Devil's Tower.

Sorry. I just can't think of a movie title ending in "close."

The second version of the clue contains a simple restating of the title of the first moving, using other words.
Deafening Sound and unbelievable proximity... encounters of the third kind. :)

Well, there are no movies titled "Thunder Close" or "Roar Close," so I have no idea.

Cheating permitted after a couple of days. This was a recent Best Picture Oscar nominee. Not a blockbuster, but hardly obscure by definition.
