AKC registered dogs are assigned names by their breeder. I don't know if Wierwille, himself, was the breeder or if Tick ever sired a litter. Those are two factors that would affect naming and renaming. There is a protocol that must be followed and a fee that is assessed when a name change takes place. Wierwille wasn't too keen on following other people's protocol or paying fees but, I don't know if that had anything to do with it.

You mean to tell me that.....naming a dog "Tick" doesn't signal some sort of psychological or pathological
deficiency in one's view of loyal affection? Hmmmm.....
One of the greater joys I have in life is spending time with my dog (dogs). Dogs were created to fellowship with man (woman). Anybody who would name a dog tick (doesn't deserve to be capitalized), hasn't any clue to what having a dog is all about.
No doubt wierwolf couldn't muster up the integrity to give his dog a real name! Might clash with his.
What's that saying....."Give one a good name in order to live up to it."
Naming "man's best friend" Tick........really? REALLY?
Just stop and visualize this. "Ticks satisfy all of their nutritional requirements on a diet of blood,
a practice known as hematophagy. They extract the blood by cutting a hole in the host's epidermis, into which
they insert their hypostome, likely keeping the blood from clotting by excreting an anticoagulant."
What the heck was wierwille thinking?
Sky, I don't think he knew what he was doing so much of the time. I heard that Tick was not well-trained; I don't know if it was true or not. Hell, maybe even Tick didn't like VPW.

I heard he was originally going to name the dog Dick but, he was afraid he'd never be able to control it.

Shucks! You must be a city boy. ;)
I offer you a quiz:
What do these three dogs have in common?
Redtick Coonhound
Bluetick Coonhound
German shorthaired pointer
Did you say the spotted coat?
Then you are a winner!!!
The mottled spots on a white coat in dogdome is called ticking.
Growing up in my rural area, not far from twi hq, Tick was a fairly common name for hunting dogs.

What I'd like to know is why Mrs. W.'s white poodle was named Coco.

Probably because with a husband like hers, she needed something 'sweet' (For women, read that chocolate.) that would love her back. ;)

Speaking of Tick reminded me of a post from the "Hunt Close" thread, post number 46:
Another hint to the his lazy shortcut way of doing things. <_<

Yeah.....images of a blood-sucking parasite.
And, in similar fashion, wierwille names his foundational class --- SLUDGE. :B)

I don't know if he was telling one of his frequent lies at the time.
However, vpw was once caught on tape telling the following,
perhaps at an ROA:
" 'Give a dog a good name and he'll live up to it.
Give a dog a bad name and he'll live down to it.'
That's why I named one dog 'Tick', the other, 'Triff.'
It's from the German word 'trefan', meaning 'to hit the mark.'
I want that dog to hit the mark. I don't want him missing it
when I'm hunting those birds."
I still don't know why "Tick" would be a GOOD name, but he claimed
he himself named the dog and that it was "a good name."

....ins Schwarze treffen = hit the mark
How did he get Tick out of that??
(Triff, I can kinda see.... but Tick?...not so much.)
I think he probably should have settled on a Dachshund and named it "Li'l Wiener".

Well.....wierwille had a deep passion to train dogs so he prayed to the Lord.
And, on a bright sunny morning, after he prayed.....the black snowstorm covered the doghouse
and the Lord said, "I will teach you how to be the best dog trainer since the first century church
if you will train many dogs, starting with your first dog whom you shall name Tick."
