Im not all that familiar with Rhode Island but I worked in a nice little town last summer called Westerly. Its the western most point in RI right on the Ct border and on the coast, nice beach (Misquamicut) although a little over run by tourists that time of year, good seafood.
Its a New Englandy seacoast town. The next town across the border is Mystic Connecticut which is the quintessential cute New England touristy town if you like that sort of thing.
There are alot of upscale restaurants in the area but I prefer the old Clam shacks that still dot the area (Westerly/Mystic) along the coastline.
As I said I was working so I didnt venture far exploring or looking at things.
Newport is supposed to be quite the place, if you are looking for castles I suppose that would be the place although Ive never been there..
If you have a 'few hours' you can pretty much drive around the whole state
and of course you could ask Pawtucket who just might know a thing or two.
Newport of course. There is a great deal to do there...it is beautiful...you can visit the mansions....the ocean.....you can shop....great places to eat.....there is a Casino there. Newport always has something going on and because it is RI...nothing is very far! I am going to RI tomorrow night.
Thank you very much! Mystic, CT; must be the same Mystic, CT that once had hamburger all over the highway, says Firesign theatre. My mom once made the word 'quahog' in scrabble. Didn't challenge her, but never knew what a quahog was. Definitely not livestock. Thanks again.
...And there's Hamburger all over the freeway in Mystic CT.
Mystic is also the home to Mystic Pizza, the location for the Julia Roberts movie of the same name.
Warwick has a Clam place called Iggy's Chowder. Right on the water. It in the Oakland Beach area. There is a really nice restaurant next door built on stilts with a gorgeous view of the Bay. Not too far away from that is Warwick Neck. A few nice homes. At the end is the Aldrich Mansion, massive and beautiful. (It was the mansion in Meet John Black with Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins)
Newport has many famous mansions. Great day trip, even better if you like to walk a lot.
Providence is home to many things, including the world's widest bridge. Plenty of great music. On the East Side is Brown University and Thayer St. Lots of restaurants and that always Collegiate feel. Great for people watching. Further on is Blackstone Blvd. If you like cemeteries , Swan Point is home to the likes of HP Lovecraft. (I've heard that it is a great place late at night with wine and special smoke, so Ive heard)
And of course, no tour of RI would be complete without going to Pawtucket, Home of the World's longest baseball game, Home of Mr. Potato Head, and Home of the old Slater Mill, one of the first Textile mills, powered by the Pawtucket river.
Right in the heart of Providence, near RISD (if you're the artistic type) you have to go see WATER FIRE...probably can go online and find out when they're having it. If you're in CT, Yale has a great museum...and, of course, you can always go to Cape Cod. In a few weeks there's a daffodil festival on Nantucket, which is a really nice day trip. Have fun! I got a foot of snow today...hope it warms up a tad for you :)
Went to Rhode Island today. 47 down 3 to go. Watched the sunrise on Blue Shutters beach near Westerly.
Over all it's been a great vacation. Did 2 things in NYC: went on a 1 hour boat ride near NY harbor on the Zephyr, part of the Manhattan Circle line cruises, and saw Spiderman on broadway at the Foxwood theatre on 42nd St. near 7th Ave. That was fantastic. They had a harness set up to do aerial fight scenes right above the audience as far out as the mezanine (1st balcony). Good show.
But the best part has been reconnecting with my sister. She's 14 years older than I am. I don't know her like my kids all know each other. I wasn't sure how we'd all get along, but it's been terrific. She's not a believer. It's been a fun week.

Once upon a time, I courted and married a young lady who was an animal trainer at the Mystic Marine-life Aquarium. She was working with the seals.
