This is one of the few cemetaries to have both Confederate AND Union soldiers interred..
A few ladies in the town of Columbus caused quite a stir when they not only laid flowers on the graves of the confederate soldiers but also on the union soldiers... which was a very revolutionary act at the time.
Poems and stories were printed nationally about this gracious act of reverence that began the healing of the nation from the scars of the Civil War.
Other towns, cities and states started their own Decoration Day--many years later this became Memorial Day.
Although this is a time to honor and remember all those who have given their lives, if you are ever in Mississippi, this is a place worth going to see.
i want to pay tribute to my Uncle Alvin who served in the Korean War and came home and died in his early 40s of leukemia -- my grandfather (his dad) said it was because
to my dear friend's brother who came home from Vietnam -- a very sensitive soul -- who took his life once back home
