I use essentials on all my computers and I install it on my clients PC's also. Not had a single issue yet other than it does not install on some PC's until all or most of the windows updates are done.
I figure if there is a virus Microsoft will be in the know plus it is integrated into windows update which is very secure. Also it may actually work better than any virus scan on the market because Microsoft knows its own operating system better than anyone else. I even wonder if some of it may be written in machine language which would give it a speed advantage over other offerings. Like windows firewall I think is the best software firewall also

There has been mixed reports about WSE, from bad to good.
Personally for a free anti virus solution, I would choose Avira or Avast.
