There's a like organisation in the city where I live. Just a small fellowship. They have decided not to use a dedicated building. Apparently they meet as small groups in people's houses and then fairly often all the housegroups meet up in a pub or some such place. Or maybe in the park, in good weather.
Are people still allowed to smoke in public places in Wisconsin, then? Banned in pubs and clubs in the UK, Ireland, and several other countries. Makes going out a much nicer experience.
In my part of Wisconsin we get many people from Minnesota who come here just because they may smoke in the bars. The bar owners around here are probably happy that they can't smoke in those bars across the river, it means more business for the Wisconsin bars.
The thing I keep going back to about church in a bar is that I have a hard time picturing it not causing more problems than it solves.
But who knows, it still might mange to help someone I guess?????
I don't know. Sounds a bit like TWI was back in the early 1970's. We met in parks, bars, basements or any other place that was available. We also met quite often spontaneously without any pre-planning.
I think the relaxed, laid back atmospher might be good for some. I also see the disadvantages to that dynamic, too, such as lack of who's who and what are they there for.
I know this isn't the doctrinal forum but this thread made me think of this.....Jesus went to the people...He sent the disciples to the people...seems a few times in the epistles Paul and several other folks went to the people...
All of them went to where the folks were hanging out and met them where they were.
I posted some time ago regarding what my friend Karen said, We were treated better by our biker friends in the bar than in church. I have never hung out in a biker bar. But I have hung out in a few bars and some churches.
This reminds of an amusing few moments of anticipation I had when I was in Cornwall, England, and came upon a sign at the end of a remote country lane that read, "St. Just Bar and Church."
I though to myself, "wow, these guys have got it tuned-in, haven't they?"
So....
Curiosity being what it is, and me being the adventurous type, I wound my way down the one-lane country road to a beautiful, old church building with a small, centuries-old cemetery next to it.
"Beautiful," I thought, "now, where's the bar?"
Sure enough, through the tress I saw a bunch of small boats next to the church resting on the "bar" ... just waiting for high tide so they could make their way to the Atlantic. :B)
What's next NASCAR church? Here comes the pastor around turn four, OH! He just wiped out the back pew, the choir director raises the yellow flag, and the pastor driving for team Jesus limps back to the pulpit where he'll have to finish his sermon.

Good for them. Excellent idea.

I'd much prefer it to stuffy church.

Remember the time Jesus body slammed that downtrodden leper who was just looking for a cool drink of water ?
Harvest Church in Winterville Georgia has taken up providing "Ultimate Christian Wrestling" in its church to remind you..
Story LINK.
Jesus may have died for you but he sure could have put you in a headlock and hit you with a folding chair if he wanted....
each to his own but this is a little much for me..
