I have always been a HUGE fan of Sheriff Joe! I have no sympathy for scofflaws and it pains me that some of them in our fair state live better than those who have lost their jobs and homes or live in the inner city. Of course, here they would be wearing pink parkas and sweat pants in the cold tents! Hmmmm! Not a bad idea!
May God bless Sheriff Joe, and may his tribe increase!
Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.
I like some of the reforms he has instituted, but this last comment really ticked me off. Anyone who has visited a prison knows that prisoners do not live in luxury. That is an ignorant assumption. Punishment is fine. . . but without rehabilitation it is useless and causes recidivism.
What this Sheriff is doing in many ways is rehabilitation. Teaching responsibility and ethics, while holding prisoners to account.
What is it this person thinks the prisoners are enjoying. . . which average taxpayers can't. TV? They have to buy a TV to enjoy it. . . prisoners pay for their own televisions . . . or try to watch with a dozen or more other prisoners in a rec room where you can't hear and may see a part of the screen. Also, not the safest place to hang out.
Food? Prisoners have a very minimal 1300 calorie a day diet in many prisons. . . they have to pay for any food beyond that. . . from the canteen.
Soap, shampoo, toothpaste, drinking cups, lotion, face wash, and even clothes are all paid for as extras by the prisoners. They are issued two sets of clothes. Anything else they have to buy.If anything is stolen. . . you are out of luck. . . no reissue.
They do their own laundry. . . work at jobs for less than 10 dollars a week. . . sometimes 30 hours or more. . . so it is not as luxurious as it sounds. LOL
I don't have too many issues with Sheriff Joe's reforms. . . they are humane. . . they work. . . but, I do take issue with the quote above.
The people who actually support anything beyond the bare minimums in prisons are the family or advocacy groups. . . many of the families are poor themselves and sacrifice for their loved ones in prison. The family also suffers when someone is incarcerated. It is not as cut and dry as it sounds. . . BTW. . . there is no smoking in prisons anymore.
Just a little bit more on the luxury prisoners endure. . . now bear in mind minimum sentencing guidlines imposed on judges. . .meaning a first time Non-violent offender can be incarcerated for years.
You get the wrong DA or one that has political asperations. . . anyone is fair game. . . including young kids. . . who make a mistake and should be given parole. I have seen this with my own eyes. . . . I saw a judge CRY when sentencing someone, because her hands were tied.
Prisoners pay everytime they put a sick slip in. They have to get permission to carry tylenol on them and they pay for the tylenol. If they run out and have pain. . . if they don't have a slip in. . . and can't borrow some . . . . .they suffer.
You have to advocate hard to get them their proper meds in prison. Many of these people are mentally ill. Meds are not priority. . . it is a real pain to work this system.
They are strip searched before and after visits. . . before and after work. . . no matter their crime. It is dehumanizing.
The guards can be verbally abusive to the prisoners and to the families. . . I have SEEN it. I know it to be true.
The rules change with the guards. I watched one woman have to leave the prison and go buy NEW clothes before she visited her daughter. Why? The guards didn't approve of her clothes. Guess what? They told her different slacks. . . she came back. . . they made her go get a different shirt. She was in tears. . . . this is a visitor. Not even a prsioner. She had worn the SAME clothes two weeks before.
Mind games go on all the time.
It is not a good system or one any of us would call luxury if we found ourselves on the inside. I go to a prison two and sometimes three times a week. I am telling you. . . hard places.
Not everyone in a prison should be there either. Some should be in hospitals or mental health facilities. Most need so much help.
Actually in the state where I live there is smoking in prisons but they have to buy the cigarettes or have someone give them cigarettes. They do, however, receive free treatment at a fine cancer hospital for the lung malignancies and other side effects of smoking. People who are not imprisoned but have no health insurance or money are usually not treated at this hospital, or if they are, they are hounded for the money until they probably think dying of cancer would be easier.
I do realize hospitals cannot refuse treatment to a patient, but they CAN and DO refer them off somewhere else where treatment is less than optimal.
I have absolutely no sympathy for felons; they made a bad choice and got caught. Most but not all of them are indeed victims - of their own stupidity.
Just my opinion.
And while prisons are under state control, jails are under the control of the sheriff of that county.
Having been to prisons and met prisoners. . . I just see it from another perspective.
Prison Ministry is a wonderful thing. . . but it is not for everyone.
Jesus hung out with the sinners. . . :)
For the most part, the penal system is dominated by ideas of retribution, punishment and even isolation.
The Christian gospel--forgiveness, compassion, redemption, reconciliation, restorative justice--and these often do run counter to prevailing sentiments.
I get the frustration. . . I really do. But, IMHO people in prison need love and visits too.
Well, yeah, I don't disagree with that. Not at all.
But rehabilitation suggests there was wrongdoing in the first place and I guess what I object to is the concept that the criminal him/herself is a victim. That may be true in some instances, but the guy who stabs an 80-year-old woman on the street to get her purse and leaves her bleeding I don't see that much as a victim.
There's a fairly obscure book I read and still own: "Let's Take Back Our Streets" by Reuben Greenberg. Mr. Greenberg is retired now, but he was chief of police of the City of Charleston, SC for many years. He was the first African American police chief there, ever. He was Jewish, Texan and had two masters' degrees. He cut crime dramatically from day 1 with imaginative techniques and was very popular, even featured on "60 Minutes".

Prisoners not yet convicted should only be kept from the possibility of doing any harm to society, pending trial.
I'm VERY glad God's view of people is vastly different than yours.
Maybe we should let Obama know, this could save us money.
Arpaio COSTS Maricopa county taxpayers more than what is on the books.
He has been successfully sued for numerous violations of laws and rights of prisoners.
He has caused harm and death to people who would not necessarily have been convicted.
Apraio used to have an 85+ percent approval rate.
He barely squeeked by in his last election. Many voters have come to realize the true facts about this evil man.
And your sources for claiming so are . . . . . .??? (especially #'s 1 & 3).
Rocky is completely right. My sister in law lives in Maricopa county, and under the watch of "Sherriff Joe" the city has been successfully sued and cost the city great deals of money, crime is skyrocketing which he is doing nothing about, and he pulled people off of things like homicide to work immigration law (which often consists of arresting hispanic U.S. citizens for doing things like driving while hispanic, then expecting their families to bring birth certificates in to prove they aren't undocumented immigrants.) Phoenix is now the kidnapping capital of the U.S. because of his incompetence and failure to do anything about crime.
Sherriff Joe is a fascist who would be at home in WWII era Italy, except that he wouldn't even be capable of keeping the trains running. He is nothing but hype and has caused more problems than he has fixed. Painting prisons pink and forcing prisoners to live in tents in the desert sounds tough, but it is all just theatrics.

Unflippin believable with all this going on the citizens would re-elect Sheriff Joe with 83% of the vote. Is that number correct? 83%? Did the voters really do that? I don't have a dog in this show.
I have read how the sheriff treats those not yet convicted or been to trial the same as those who have. I don't think that is right.
I remember reading that the sheriff got his idea of pink from our state. The inside walls of a maximum security prison here are painted pink and the prisoners wear pink. That has been so for nearly 21 years. Supposedly, a study said pink has a calming effect.

NO that number is NOT correct for this last election.
YEARS ago, before very many people started catching on to his shenanigans, he had that high approval... but not now.
He barely won... and ONLY because he hits the nerve too many people have about illegal immigration.
He talks tough on doing what is the job of the federal government and people want to hear it regardless of whether it's within his charge by law.

No. You ask that I Google to find out what you *claim*.
You can believe it or not --- but since you said you lived in the county in question, I believed you thus my question for *sources*. I figured if anyone had them it would be you, and what did you do?? You blew me off.

Working on stemming illegal immigration doesn't sound like fascism to me. Give that man a medal.
Here's some news articles corroborating Rocky's assertions, this one regarding the constitutional rights of a newspaper to report against joe being violated, reporters arrested, and the newspaper's reader's rights to privacy being violated by tracking their internet activity click here   and here
The Goldwater Institute compiled facts, data and statistics of the Sheriff's dept very telling, $30 million spent on lost lawsuits against the dept, and an additional $11.3 million spent on liability insurance as a result...he actually has a PR staff.click here to read pdfÂ
Also interesting to note lawsuites won against the Sherriff's office include mysterious deaths at the hands of deputies, inmate abuse, wrongful arrests, denial of medical services for inmates, falsification of documents by sheriff's office, mysterious expendatures to a vacation spot in Honduras, dept workers filling in overtime on time cards at the beginning of work week, current and ongoing countless federal investigations of inmate conditions, audits, civil rights violations of hispanic residents and illegal aliens...the list goes on.
Working on stemming illegal immigration doesn't sound like fascism to me. Give that man a medal.
So you think all hispanic people are "illegal immigrants" now? If you read my post, you would see that I discussed him arresting U.S. citizens on fake immigration violations for simply being hispanic. Here is an example:
Correa said he informed MCSO deputies that he was an American citizen, born in Maricopa County, but that they did not believe him because of his accent. In any case, he cooled his heels in stir till morning, when he was informed that he would not yet be released.
"They told me I had an ICE hold," said Correa. "I said, `But I told you I was a U.S. Citizen!' They said, "Yeah, yeah, come on.' Then they put me with all the immigrants. I was in there for like six more hours. I continued calling my family, and they kept calling the jail."
Perhaps you don't care about non-white U.S. citizens, but I think it's wrong to arrest people without reason. At this point, all hispanics, regardless of immigration or citizenship status, have to carry their paperwork with them at all times. Pretty much everyone considers it fascism to live where you have to carry identification at all times so random police can stop you and demand to see proof of your citizenship, especially when it is among ethnic lines.
"Sheriff Joe" is a dictionary definition fascist, plain and simple.
Well, yeah, I don't disagree with that. Not at all.
But rehabilitation suggests there was wrongdoing in the first place and I guess what I object to is the concept that the criminal him/herself is a victim. WG
Hi WG,
This is a big smile I am sending your way :) okay? That means I really do love some of the things you write and they have helped me. I respect you. I understand what you are saying, and I know that there are unrepentant awful people in prison. Agreed!! No argument.
But, I wonder if you remember the Amish children who were cruelly and senselessly gunned down by the guy who then killed himself? Remember what happened? The Amish forgave him. Those were beautiful innocent young girls, some as young as six. Beloved by their parents. . . their loss was devestating.
The Amish not only forgave, but they went to the funeral of the gunman to comfort the wife. They said, they knew she was greiving too. They reached out to her. Their forgivness was real. What happened in that moment? The country took a long deep breath. . . . . . and held it in for a moment. God, in that amazing act of forgiveness was glorified.
There are actually repentant people in prison. People sorry for their crimes and forgiven by the Lord. Who am I not to reach out to those, who are being punished by society, and offer human compassion and love? But, it goes even further than that. "If my enemy hunger". . . so I can reach out to those who have not yet heard that they can be forgiven. . . . and tell them of the free gift in Jesus. Even if they don't accept it. . . I can still offer them what I have to give. . . compassion.
Please don't think I don't care about the victims of crime. I mourn losses of those I never knew, by just hearing of them. Heck, I cried for half an hour over Twinky's cat passing. I do care greatly.
Life is not always black and white. . . it dwells in shades of gray.. . . . .my take anyway. . . :)
My husband works at a state prison(and they have it pretty easy... those prisoners)
on the other hand I worked with homeless people that have it far worse than the prisoners.
Well, Cheranne. . . I have come up against plenty of prison guards. . . stepped in and stopped them from cruel and inappropriate comments to family members of inmates. . . sorry, I am just not impressed. I am sure your husband is a very nice guy, but that is his perspective. From the inside of a cell. . . there may be another.
How do you respond when people say of the homeless. . . . they should just "Get a job." Circumstances and life's troubles, disabilities, mental illness, education level, mental development, and opportunity often preclude this simple answer. . . don't they? Could be. . . . a mother with a hungry child may get caught in shoplifting. . . no? She could even end up in. . . JAIL!!
Here's some news articles corroborating Rocky's assertions, this one regarding the constitutional rights of a newspaper to report against joe being violated, reporters arrested, and the newspaper's reader's rights to privacy being violated by tracking their internet activity click here   and here

Thanks Now I See, I didn't know any of this. . . much appreciated.

Try to live by what you preach, eh???
The difference? I did NOT, in this situation, directly or indirectly quote or refer to any source.
I -- LIVE -- in Maricopa County. OurPieHole is far too often in the news and usually it is for something that should shame him.
This one takes the cake, in this article, Click Here, Sheriff Joe had an actor who was featured on an opposing political ad arrested on Halloween on trumped up charges of impersonating an officer when he wore pink shorts, an I heart Arizona T-shirt, a smokey the bear hat and an umbuttoned DPS shirt with two kid's  star badges on it.  The Phoenix police refused to cite or arrest the actor when they were called, but shurreff joe's depidees did.
Needless to say, the actor sued and won a lawsuit against the Sherriff's Office. Â Simply amazing...

Dude yourself. Sure I can Google. Seems to me (just an imo on my part), that you DEMAND proof from anyone who happens to hold an opinion against yours and if I recollect correct, you've made MORE than one demand for them there who oppose you to prove it by offering links/ studies/ "official" renderings on the subject at hand ---- but for you??? No. You ask that I Google to find out what you *claim*.
You can believe it or not --- but since you said you lived in the county in question, I believed you thus my question for *sources*. I figured if anyone had them it would be you, and what did you do?? You blew me off.
You may have credible sources proving what you said, but with that last post, you lost any and all credibility with me.
Try to live by what you preach, eh???

Working on stemming illegal immigration doesn't sound like fascism to me. Give that man a medal.

Here's some news articles corroborating Rocky's assertions, this one regarding the constitutional rights of a newspaper to report against joe being violated, reporters arrested, and the newspaper's reader's rights to privacy being violated by tracking their internet activity click here   and here
The Goldwater Institute compiled facts, data and statistics of the Sheriff's dept very telling, $30 million spent on lost lawsuits against the dept, and an additional $11.3 million spent on liability insurance as a result...he actually has a PR staff. click here to read pdfÂ

Mister P-Mosh
So you think all hispanic people are "illegal immigrants" now? If you read my post, you would see that I discussed him arresting U.S. citizens on fake immigration violations for simply being hispanic. Here is an example:
Perhaps you don't care about non-white U.S. citizens, but I think it's wrong to arrest people without reason. At this point, all hispanics, regardless of immigration or citizenship status, have to carry their paperwork with them at all times. Pretty much everyone considers it fascism to live where you have to carry identification at all times so random police can stop you and demand to see proof of your citizenship, especially when it is among ethnic lines.
"Sheriff Joe" is a dictionary definition fascist, plain and simple.

Hi WG,
This is a big smile I am sending your way :) okay?
Life is not always black and white. . . it dwells in shades of gray.. . . . .my take anyway. . . :)
How do you respond when people say of the homeless. . . . they should just "Get a job." Circumstances and life's troubles, disabilities, mental illness, education level, mental development, and opportunity often preclude this simple answer. . . don't they? Could be. . . . a mother with a hungry child may get caught in shoplifting. . . no? She could even end up in. . . JAIL!!
Thanks Now I See, I didn't know any of this. . . much appreciated.
