The Groundhog.org site says 1886 was the first year they officially recognized Groundhog Day.

I remember when I was young, my dad always had something to say about whether the groundhog saw his shadow or not.. kinda a big deal to him..

maybe just a well deserved vacation from reality with a moment of sheer lunacy..
