Cost effective strategy. The cost of paper skyrocketed in the mid seventies.
They were paper back when I took it in 79 so I am assuming they changed in 76 or 77?
I think they used roughly the same paper in both, and it was a poor grade, but the binding cost would have dropped considerably in the hard cover and the gold stamping on it.

Oh I am sure that came into it too but I believe due to the cost of paper itself rising substantially because of a combination of the oil shortages and increased demand for paper. So I am guessing that the rise in paper costs created the need to reduce the cost of producing the books by eliminating the binding, gold stamping etc.
For those interested it was a world wide shortage in the early through mid 70's
