Kit Sober
First National Thanksgiving Proclamation George Washington, First National Thanksgiving Proclamation In order to thank God for the First Amendment, which was passed a week earlier by Congress, President George Washington issued the first National Thanksgiving Proclamation, 1789: "Whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me 'to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness;'" Washington continued: "Now, therefore, I do recommend...Thursday, the 26TH DAY of NOVEMBER . . . to be devoted by the People of these United States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be;" Washington concluded: "That we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks . . .for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government . . . particularly the national one now lately instituted, for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed . . . to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue." I hope your Thanksgiving is wonderful.

waterbuffalo
Thanks Kit and cheranne. Here's a not so usual prayer of thanksgiving that I like. I wanted to share it with all of you today. It goes like this: The Request and the Response (A Universal Prayer of Thanksgiving) I asked God for strength, that I might achieve. I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey. I asked for health, that I might do greater things. I was given infirmity, that I might do better things. I asked for riches, that I might be happy. I was given poverty, that I might be wise. I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men, I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God. I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life. I was given life, that I might enjoy all things. I got nothing that I asked for, but everything I had hoped for, Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered. I am among all men (and women), most richly blessed. Happy Thanksgiving everyone :-)

Here's a not so usual prayer of thanksgiving that I like. I wanted to share it with all of you today. It goes like this:
The Request and the Response
(A Universal Prayer of Thanksgiving)
I asked God for strength, that I might achieve.
I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey.
I asked for health, that I might do greater things.
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things.
I asked for riches, that I might be happy.
I was given poverty, that I might be wise.
I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men,
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God.
I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life.
I was given life, that I might enjoy all things.
I got nothing that I asked for, but everything I had hoped for,
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am among all men (and women), most richly blessed.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone :-)
