Right Sudo, "Having problems with a gut?" I also had acid reflux. The doc warned me about the seriousness of that over time & wanted to put me on medicine for it. Bahm, within a few days of starting South Beachm that was totally gone. NICE benefit!

Sudo, Thanks for starting the post and sharing your success. My husband and I started the South Beach diet last week. It's really not difficult and we both feel much better already. The big thing we both noticed is there is no real desire for evening snacking and we just don't eat as much even though we don't count calories or portion control. I will say I am looking forward to adding fruit back, especially berries. We are right in peak season here in NY and that was the only thing that was tempting when I was at the market.

The book I am reading now -- The cardiac Recovery Handbook...Dr.Paul Kligfield.

Says on page 180 -- "Methods for Raising HDL"

Quit smoking

Get moving

Cut the Carbs

(qualified later by the difference in simple and complex and the glycemic index etc...but none the less - cut the carbs)

I am at 37.5 lbs lost as of yesterday.

I've got plenty of energy. I'm digging through my closet for smaller sizes.

Here is the site about the liquid diet that I am doing www.optifast.com

CONGRATS!!!!

Kinda like getting a whole new life, isn't it?

I'll bet you wish you had a 15 year old kid, like I do, so you can wear his hand-me-downs :D

How much do you have to go?

Optifast is the weight loss plan Oprah used to drop 67 pounds. She needs help again.

I had great success [and quick] with a medically supervised liquid diet. You do miss chewing [anything] in the beginning. Eventually I added non-starchy vegetable soups [clear broths only] and salads to my lunch menu, with a full but controlled "real" dinner.

If you do these plans correctly and completely, I find that they help a person be successful quickly to drop the weight. This keeps you motivated. All your other numbers improve; BP, Cho, Insulin levels, thryoid, etc.

The biggest thing it helped for me was relearning portion control. We've gotten so used to supersized meals. I learned to control portions of calorie dense foods---proteins and fats. I also learned to limit grain consumption. [Grains are a problem for me, but not everyone---our metabolism is as individual as our fingerprints, so it's a trial and error to find the right balance]. Therefore, I limit all starch intake [including potatoes, corn, peas, rice, root veggies] to no more than 45 grams per day.

I have a protein serving at mid morning and mid afternoon without fail; this keeps me from being famished at regular mealtime with the family.

I do moderate exercise 3 days a week. I have kept the 52lbs off for 3 years now! :jump:

Today I reached a milestone, the 100 lb mark. I've lost a total of 101.7 lbs. I feel so much better and more energetic. I still have a ways to go, but I never thought that I would be able to lose this much, but with the help of a structured program I did.

Congratulations!!!

The client at the house I work at that has Pradar - Willie syndrome lost 300 pounds, but it took 14 years to do so.

Good luck on reaching your goal. :)

Interesting information

I have tried the Atkins thing but for me it was a big bust My Cholesterol soared as did my blood pressure and then those lovely little things called Hot flashes were way way worse when I was on it.

For me doing the opposite was what did it for me. I switched to Vegetarian eating. I am not a full vegetarian I do eat a bit of fish occasionally and the occasional tiny bit of meat here and there

but my numbers all of them were back on track with in two weeks

My cholesterol plummeted from 196 to 119 that was the bad one

and my good cholesterol went up from 24 to 34

my blood sugar was normal and my blood pressure went from 134/88 to 117/76

And I lost weight.

for the first time in over a year all my numbers were in control

also a side benefit was that my hot flashes went almost completely away

SO I am happy to do the Vegetarian diet,

Every body is different

and so you really do need to try different things out.

I still have about 35 lbs to loose but I am well on my way to being a much healthier person.

All I can add is "God Bless Us Everyone"!

I used to share this little 10 minute nutritional biochemistry explanation re: Carbs, short and long chain fatty acids, protein, fat, etc...those that followed it lost the weight.

Some of my patients thought I was this diet-guru...LOL Should have gone on Oprah, huh?

It's just real simple...doing it can be the hard part; cause we in the western world, love our long chain fatty acids, flour, potatoes, rice, cookies (man, do I love cookies), etc.

Lets see if I can remember? 1970 I weighed 165, today I weigh 175...my peak was 197 when I worked in the Gulf of Mexico on the oil rigs...man those cooks' can cook!

Congrats to all and carry on :eusa_clap::dance:

"Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot"...I love it! LOL

Hello everyone!!

Had to chime in on this one. First ,, Sudo great pics !! Paw,, fantastic news!! I started on Atkins about two years ago when I went to renew my term life insurance policy. As you know the insurance companies want a blood test done to qualify you for the lower priced policy. My total Cholesterol was 345. They refused to give me the lower price premium and of course offered me a new one at at much higher rate. It was at that time that Sudo posted a thread where he talked about Atkins and the benefits/results he was getting. I decided to do Atkins and am happy I did. My total now is 175 and I have managed to keep a level weight of 185lbs and high energy level.

At the time I discovered I had high cholesterol I was not really overweight according to my doctor. I was 6' ft tall and 205 lbs. My problem was lack of energy which I just wrote off as age. My doc wanted me to go on statins for the cholesterol. I decide to not take the meds based on what I was hearing about the side effects. I wanted to try diet first. I can honestly say it worked thanks to the information I had received from Sudo's thread.

Ok..I do admit taking viagra back then because I was lacking in energy and was impotent as hell. But after a short time on Atkins I regained my energy level without the use of the little blue pill and whalla today I can gladly  confess that the ol 'twig and berries' are functioning just fine. :evildenk: At 56 years old I am happy as a young stud in pasture. Funny ....remember when the ladies would accuse us guys of thinking about only one thing.. I can honestly say that they are wrong..I personally think about my diet first and then the ONE thing second. :biglaugh:

THANK YOU SUDO!!! :)

Leafy, do you have Type A blood? I tried the Atkins several years ago. Most miserable I have ever been in my life. I was bloated, constipated, lethargic, swollen and down right sick. After two weeks and gaining 14 pounds my trainer took me off. He asked me if I had Type A blood. I said yes. He said that a lot of times, not always, folks with Type A do not respond well on Atkins. Less than one week I had lost the weight. There is a book and I forget the title that addresses the different blood types and how they respond to diets and foods

My body can not handle protein in the form of meat particularly beef. I eat beef and I am miserable for a few days. But, holy moly, a juicy burger cooked on the grill is out of this world!!! In the summer I treat myself to about two. I pay for it for about 2 days. My insides is not happy.

I find it hard to believe that the fruits and veggies that God made is not good for us.

There is another book, Sugar Busters. It deals with eliminating white foods. They are usually highly processed foods.

I guess we all need the routine of Michael Phelps or marathon runners to enjoy lots of carbs. But you know my grandparents were corn, tobacco, pig and chicken farmers. They worked long hard hours. Grandpa never had power tools. When he built something it was all done by hand tools. Grandma washed clothes on a scrub board. We walked many places. The fruit garden was 1/2 mile from the house and the vegetable garden was 1/4 mile. There were no tillers for the family garden. It was all done by hand and hoe. The family garden fed us until the crop came in next year. They ate many fried foods, lard, biscuits made from white flour, there was always a homemade cake, sweet southern tea and they never had health problems. They died of old age. I think the key is that they were never idle. They always got plenty of fresh air and exercise.
