Thanks for your words and your posts. You brought an offering of Lutheran hymns that I had not read or heard.
For reasons I do not want to bring up in this thread, however, I have been avoiding posting at GSC, and possibly will return, following this post, to reading-only status for an indefinite period.
My purpose in starting this thread was to acquaint (and draw in a few other folks to acquaint) ex-Wayfers with a broader sampling of Christian hymns than the selections of the TWI songbook. My exposure to Christian hymns, though broader than the TWI experience, is obviously quite narrow, compared to yours. You have an extensive knowledge of hymnody (which is something that probably goes with being an educated church music director).
I will post what will probably be my final links for this thread. Links to audio files should appear near the top center of the web pages for which I have provided URLs. The audio files are not midi files, but are hymn performances by what seems, to my ears, to be a talented choir. Some hymns have appeared previously in this thread, though some, I think, have not.
Thanks, again, Thomas, for your erudite input and participation in this thread.
Some hymns:
“I Greet Thee Who My Sure Redeemer Art,” (Strasbourg Psalter -- sometimes attributed to John Calvin)
As a final response, while most hymns were Lutheran or Episcopalian, some were Roman Catholic, Moravian, and Contemporary Praise. I would have accepted songs from CFFM, S&TFI, CR&F, COF, plus materials from Integrity, Maranatha, WOW Worship, and any denominational or ecumenical hymnal. I am glad I could contribute to this thread. Thomas Loy Bumgarner
Oh wow, just looked in on this thread. It seems to be closing.
I like the idea of trying to stretch our hymn-knowledge, or rather, dig it out of the dust. Some of the hymns I've never heard of. But I knew the Christmas carols. Years in school, Sunday school, carol concerts, no doubt.
There are some really awesome old hymns but a lot of the more modern ones are a bit ... off the Word (dare I say that?).
I have some older hymn books with music, and I read/review the words occasionally of the songs. I can see why they would have been unacceptable to TWI.
Wording like, "Holy, holy, holy / ... / God in three persons / Blessed trinity."
But apart from that chorus, the words are nice.
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessèd Trinity!
Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,
Who was, and is, and evermore shall be.
Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see;
Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,
Perfect in power, in love, and purity.
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise Thy Name, in earth, and sky, and sea;
Twinky, TWI could have changed it to "God in one person, blessed unity" if they had wanted to. btw, sorry I never got back to listing more hymn titles, just been too busy. However, the few I mention are a small sample of what is out there.

Don't feel bad. "Name That Author" seems to have gone not with a bang, but a whimper, also. I gravitate more towards the low-brow entertainment!

George,
It has been pleasant trying to name a few hymns and guess a few authors -- as well as interesting trying to enlighten a few liberals -- with you.
Adieu

I recently found obituaries for hymn writer Margaret Clarkson:

http://www.e-n.org.uk/p-4236-Edith-Margare...n-1915-2008.htm
Some of her hymns appear at Cyber Hymnal:

Wheaton College’s website has somewhat of an overview of her life:
http://www.wheaton.edu/learnres/ARCSC/exhibits/clarkson
Her first words, according to the Wheaton College site, reportedly were “my head hurts,” and she lived a long life in chronic pain.
She seemed to hold a strong view of the sovereignty of God:

Goodbye, dear lady, whose words and example have provided enrichment to Christ’s church.

I will later on this week list hymns for Lent, Holy Week and Easter which will be close to 100 titles. Some will be familar, others may be new to you.
