bfh
NEW YORK - Thanks to Bob Dylan, rock 'n roll has finally broken through the Pulitzer wall. Dylan, the most acclaimed and influential songwriter of the past half century, who more than anyone brought rock from the streets to the lecture hall, received an honorary Pulitzer Prize on Monday, cited for his "profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power." It was the first time Pulitzer judges, who have long favored classical music, and, more recently, jazz, awarded an art form once dismissed as barbaric, even subversive. "I am in disbelief," Dylan fan and fellow Pulitzer winner Junot Diaz said of Dylan's award. dmiller
Rock and Roll?? Nonesense!!!! Bob Zimmerman was first and foremost a FOLK - singer. Granted --- he was a songwriter with few (if any) peers in his time; But "Rock and Roll has finally broken through"??? Not in my book -- if Bobby Zimmerman is in the mix.
bfh
dmiller: I agree with you - Dylan was a folk singer. It actually made me chuckle when I read that about rock n' roll. Maybe a young kid wrote it that doesn't even know who Dylan was, or the type of songs he sang and wrote. But I still think it's pretty cool. dmiller
Well --- he certainly deserves accolades, even if the category is wrong. I remember the first time he appeared on stage with an electric guitar. He was boo'd off stage as a traitor, to all he'd ever done in the past. bfh
I remember hearing something about the booing off stage...but I was never a big fan of Dylan. Now, I'm waiting for the song writing team of Lennon/McCartney to get the Pulitzer that they so richly deserve (IMO anyway)!
