I'd design a broken-down "Tower of Babel." It would be unclear as to whether it was being built or breaking down. All around it would be a hole in the ground with some of the sides gradual and some steep. The tower itself would have many different staircases of various heights strewn around it that suddenly ended and went now where.
At one side of the hole would be a tunnel out - and at the end... one word: "Freedom"

I think I'd make an enormous statue-monument of a bottle of snake oil with a simple inscription at it's base:
DON'T

That good one george! How about we put that one on the hiway leading to New Knoxville Ohio
and to make it more realistic we decorate the highway with uprooted trees and skulls saying
"you'll be sorrrrrry"

I agree with George; except instead of the bottle, it would be a broken cistern which can hold no snake oil, so it dribbles out the bottom.

I'd like to see a statue of a big tongue.
(Like the one on that old Stones album cover.)
There would be a plaque at its base with the following inscription:
Lo shanta shanta bo banta
Bananna fana fo fanta
Fee fie mo manta---shanta

It would be a broken door that has no door handle.
The lack of a door knob symbolizes how once through the door there is no escape.
The broken door symbolizes the doors we had to break down to leave. We all have external and internal doors.
