I've listened to several of Ray Stevens tunes lately as I'm listening to a lot of oldies music right now. In fact, I'm listening to some right now. But this one escapes me.
Thanks. I'm doing something right now but I should find some time later tonight to post here and I think I'm also up on two other threads. But I will get to it. Thanks for your patience.

Shouldn't get this confused with the musicians solo career because it's from his original group who just happened to be the greatest rock group of all time.

Is it possible that what you thought that you heard [like myself] instead of Southampton was Japan? I'll wait for one day or for a response from someone before I add the next line. It's sort of like "Hello Darkness my old friend" at least to me, it has a start to the song that you just automatically know what it is. Again, at least to me it does.
I can answer that I have no idea what song this is. I doubt Raf knows any better. Unless he's married to a Beatles fan, he's listening to less of their stuff than I am, now.

Yes WordWolf, One of my very favorite songs. Hopes the memories are good ones. Your answer, of course, is spot on. Your go!

I agree with you about "Who's Nect" and äqualung". I'm more familiar with The Doors by their catalog than which song is on what album, but I know enough to know you just mentioned "L.A. WOMA

This doesn't seem like a song remembered from just one or two lines to me. After two I'm still scratching my head.

Hint: It's a Ray Stevens tune.

I only know of a few Ray Stevens songs.
Any chance this preceded a TV news report of "The Streak"???

No.
It's "Along Came Jones." (Interestingly, I always heard "Sawtooth Sam," not "Salty Sam.")

"When I get to the bottom I go back to the top of the slide
Where I stop and I turn and I go for a ride
Till I get to the bottom and I see you again."
That's all one sentence!
