I agree with waysider, soul searcher. That song doesn't sound at all familiar. Who is Dave Edmunds? His name only is vaguely familiar. Cars? And who is or what is Rockpile? Ok so I checked Wikipedia, and seems Dave was part of the ~The Human Beinz~.among others, had some hits in the 70's but is mostly Punk or New Wave.
By the way, this is the thread titled Songs remembered from just one line. Now had you used one of Dave Edmunds hits from the 70's like*//////////////////////////////////////////// "Nobody But Me" you might of had a shot here.
So, just for the fun of it, I'm going to make my posts a little bit tougher (and turn some of you on to New Wave music at the same time).
I would suggest "Name that Tune" if you're trying to stump people. In this thread, the burden is on the poster to pick songs that at least a large percent of the viewers here will recognize from the first line.

Yes WordWolf, One of my very favorite songs. Hopes the memories are good ones. Your answer, of course, is spot on. Your go!

I agree with you about "Who's Nect" and äqualung". I'm more familiar with The Doors by their catalog than which song is on what album, but I know enough to know you just mentioned "L.A. WOMA

I guess this is going to take more than one line...
There are some things you can't cover up
With lipstick and powder
Thought I heard you mention my name
Can't you talk any louder?
Don't come any closer
Don't come any nearer
My vision of you
Can't get any clearer

Looking again at the title of this thread it occurs to me that I don't know what "everyone knows so well", I just know what I know well.
So, just for the fun of it, I'm going to make my posts a little bit tougher (and turn some of you on to New Wave music at the same time).
Here we go...

I'll try another line from the song

Wash your heartaches away
Were part of the fire that is burning
And from the ashes we can build another day
