even though I know the melody and who did it I will refrain from taking a guess cos I'm not sure about the name of the song. Now of course I have ideas but I'll let it ride for a bit before I share them.
WS: If that's the next guess up, it's the Night They Drove Old Dixie Down by non other than what's-her-name, oh, yeah, I can see her face .... Joan Baez--knew it'd come to me.

Ah, yes.
J.B. did a mighty fine version of it.
I actually prefer the original, which is by The Band.(From their self titled album, I think)
Not sure if it's required that the artist be named but any little bit of trivia makes it more fun.
What sayest thou, bulwinkl?
Is the artist required?
As far as I'm concerned, you're next at bat, Irisheyes.
Artist is not required as far as I'm concerned. It is preferable though. For instance I had forgotten about Baez's version of that last song and could only think of "The Band"s version. So artist is an added bonus and you will get heaps of rewards someplace other from my pocketbook.

Yes WordWolf, One of my very favorite songs. Hopes the memories are good ones. Your answer, of course, is spot on. Your go!

I agree with you about "Who's Nect" and äqualung". I'm more familiar with The Doors by their catalog than which song is on what album, but I know enough to know you just mentioned "L.A. WOMA

Last I heard there are places with snow in africa in the winter.
Maybe they were talking about the snow on Mt Kilamanjaro.
I do understand what you are saying though.

You are correct, Irisheyes!!
The other person who had a hit with it was none other than The Queen of Soul---- Aretha Franklin.
