Seriously, that's something down right handy for hurricane season! Will have to look for one, although, thanks to the TWIt Y2K paranoia, I'm pretty well stocked should the end of the world come tomorrow.... ^_^
I got a flashlight with a long barrel. There is a stationary cylinder which has wire wrapped around it, and a smaller metal cylinder shaped like a battery. Shake the flashlight quickly and you produce enough electricity that the battery will hold for about an hour's use. As long as you have enough food to give you enough energy to shake this thing, you'll have light!
Those "shake lights" do work very well. Two weeks ago we had a bad storm and the power went out for a short time. I shook my light exactly 100 times (just to see how long it would last) and laid it on the desk. The whole room was lit, dimly, but I could walk around and not kill myself - and I could read on my desk. The light never wavered for more than 90 min until the power came back.
The only bad thing is that if you charge it and leave it, the "power" dissipates very quickly...so shake it just before you want to use it.

Does the hamster come with it? Can I get it without lead paint?

Well, I've got my crank-radio too. No, I don't listen to Limbaugh, it actually cranks up and plays for 45 minutes or so...

they have variations of these at costco all of the time as well...
my experience with them has been that after a while you have to crank more and they last a shorter time...
I've heard those "shake lights" that krys mentioned are longer lasting and easier to use...

Freedom from batteries! For the price, these gadgets do the trick. A Costco run may be in the weekend plan now.

sounds like a plan my friend from the sock drawer! ...you could also pick up some of those neat LED nightlights that glow softly and change colors!
