Dooj's recipe sounds great (except for the curry). One thing I've learned about using dried beans is to soak them overnight. Since they vary in size, their rate of water absorption will vary. So... I cover them with water - about an inch over the top of the beans - bring them to a rapid boil and boil for 10 minutes. turn off the heat - let them cool - them refrigerate overnight. Check after an hour or so to make sure they are still slightly covered in water. That inch of extra water will be absorbed pretty quickly. Don't keep an inch all night - you want the water to be just even with the top when done soaking so if you need to add water do it sparingly
I copied that recipe from The Joy of Cooking (sorry for not citing it properly.)
I also usually soak beans overnight... then I rinse them and add more water. Then I simmer them a bit. This second soaking tends to ..ummm...rinse the farts out...
If you don't like curry, try cumin or chili powder.
It makes for a happier get together should the event take place indoors.

Here's what I got: I think this could be done in a crock pot as well.
Soak 1 1/2 cups dried beans
Cover them with water. Bring to a boil, then simmer slowly fo 1/2 hour or more, until tender.
Preheat oven to 250*
Drain ythe beans, reserving the cooking water, and add:
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 or 3 TBS ketchup
1 TBS dry mustard
1 tsp salt
1/2 cup boiling bean water or beer (I'd use the beer ;))
1/2 tsp vinegar
1 tsp curry powder
1 TBS Worcestershire sauce
Place beans in a greased baking dish, decorate them with
1/4 lb. sliced salt pork (or bacon strips)
Bake covered 6 to 9 hours. If they become dry, add a little
Well seasoned stock (like beef stock) or some reserved bean water
Uncover the beans for the last hour of cooking.

Edited to say that I'd also add some garlic.
