There is a balance to be struck bewteen speaking one's mind, being true to one's own beliefs on one hand, and being respectful of others on the other hand. It's possible to do both.

For an non-Christian, it's possible to be against Christianity, but not against Christians, just as it's possible for Christians to believe that atheists are wrong in their beliefs, while being understanding of why they might believe as they do.

Every question, every expression of doubt, all opposition is not an attack.

We can have a discussion about our beliefs without p i s s i n g on each others' shoes. Right?

Jonny................You never cease to amaze me, why is it everytime someone posts something and you want to add your two bits to it, it's always something perverted or you boinking someone.

You said " One could, without conscience, go out and get all of the p u s sy one wanted! One could partay big time and as long as no one got hurt by it, it would be okay!" and yet you say "I could never go there, because I still believe in the Invisible Sky Giant, and I think that His precepts are right on with Life..." but you sure do go there in the words that you write in your posts on GS.

What's up with that, I don't get it!!

Cowgirl...maybe you DO get it. That's why I pick on Jonny all the time...his imagined macho image of himself is constantly projected into his posts...On one hand, he tries to come across as a devout Christian...but on the other hand, his preoccupation with his sexual prowess is constantly showing itself....usually guys that can't "rise to the occasion" talk this way...trying to compensate for his lack of "vigor" through his imagined cyber personality....that's my guess.

...As for all you God rejecters...you're all gonna burn in hell! :evildenk:

I mean, how could a guy like Garth even exist without a God to allow it?...and as for Sudo...he's living proof that God exists!...Nobody, and I mean nobody would ever be able to stick a drill in your mouth without a God to protect them from retribution.

... God must have a pretty twisted sense of humor to allow me to exist then, ya think?

:evilshades:

That's EXACTLY what I'm saying...a Godless world would never allow you to exist...never, I say!

twisted sense of humor?...you bet! but what I have failed to mention is that he even allows Jonny Lingo to exist!!!!!!!!!

and, and, and, and...he even allows oldiesman to exist!...If that isn't proof, then I don't know what is. Amen and amen.

I respectfully disagree!...random biological "accidents" could never, in a zillion years, ever produce the personalities that we see in this world!...I must conclude that intelligent design has offered us up some very "interesting folks" throughout the ages..

...such as Pinky Lee (who remembers Pinky Lee?)

Without The Pinky Lee Show, there would be no PEE WEE's Playhouse.

Oak,

Not on my blue suede shoes!!!! BTW.. Rick has "confessed" (and I affirm that no torture was employed) to being a desultory Christian. What say we ban him to a year in the chat room with Out There?

sudo

Hey wait a minute there Sudo! Don't be messing with the chat room!

I think it's childish, at best, to get your bowels all in an uproar over what anyone else believes. It's especially childish to get hostile over it, even if you fancy yourself as some sort of "persecuted minority" because of your beliefs or lack of them.

I remember Pinky Lee. I also remember Cap'n Swabee (hosted the Popeye show), Buffalo Bob, Icky Twerp and of course, Clarabelle the Clown.

But then I'm an old guy.

Unless the ones doing the persecuting happen to be a bunch of Marxist/statist/'Dimmycrats', and the ones being persecuted are the 'lovers of liberty', ehh Ron? THEN its fer sure real, I take it. ... Maybe it depends on who's ox is being gored, ya think? <_<

But seriously Ron, simply dismissing the accounts where people genuinly get treated like 2nd class citizens (uh ohh, a 'leftist' term?), undergone discrimination, and have even been threatened due to them being "a persecuted minority", and all because it never happened to you, ... now there is the ignorant, childish part.

P.S., please don't tell us that the concept of the "persecuted minority" is just Yet Another Marxist Plot. I just ate.

By all means, lets all that have been persecuted for something get on the board and slap each other around because of our frustration, we are entitled ya know.

I think Paw would have to invest in all the remaining bandwidth to accommodate even a portion of us, never being able to allow each of us that were persecuted to get our slaps in.

... and let us not forget those who are persecuted because they like pineapple pizza, ... or who wish for the appearance of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, ... or who enjoy Ton Strange's sno cones, ..... or who believe in THE! ((snif)) :cryhug_1_:

Garth,

You're right, I've never been persecuted or treated as a second class citizen due to my beliefs. That's because I don't wear my beliefs on my shoulder and don't challenge anyone because of theirs. It's just childish for an atheist to challenge the comfort and fulfillment some people derive from their religious beliefs just as it's childish for the religious to challenge the comfort and fulfillment atheists derive from theirs.

It's just as much a myth that atheists are more intellectual as it is that the religious are more moral. All that is just absurd.

There are numerous things in our culture for which people can feel themselves persecuted and feel made to be "second class citizens".

I could get it from time to time, if I just wanted to I suppose, as...

a smoker

a film user as opposed to a digital user

Boy Scout leader

someone who prefers a standard as opposed to an automatic

despiser of Wal Mart

gun owner and enthusiast

carnivore

home school enthusiast

membership in a fraternal order that allows no political or sectarian debate

60's rock and roll fan

coin collector

and a myriad other things people enjoy feeling superior or smug over.

The reason I dislike liberals/statists and socialists so much is because they presume to know what's best for me and my life and think it's moral to pick my pocket to pay their bills.

Chatty Kathy,

Did I ever tell you I really consider you a class act? Well, if not, then here it is...

You are a classy lady!!

If it was just as you describe here, you'd have a very valid point re: the atheist/religious conflict. Unfortunately, reality poses a different picture. I've read about/listened to/talked to those of the unbelieving persuasion who have lost jobs, had their property damaged/destroyed, been physically confronted/threatened, had no chance of being elected to office (even on a local level), and the like.

Okay true, it isn't like atheists are being rounded up to be burnt at the stake en masse by The State Church, and there are atheists who make a lot more of the crap they get (mountain out of a molehill style) than is necessary. But it is still true that atheists/unbelievers are socially seen by a lot of people as lesser forms of humanity than even fundy Muslims. Various polls that I've read about substantiate this.

I imagine that folks with your political/social/economic beliefs are shortchanged/get treated like 2nd class citizens, particularly among the more 'liberal/statist/socialist' crowd, right? And haven't you posted that bit of info a time or two here on the board? (And I'm making a distinction between people who disagree with your views vis-a-vis those who view you as inferior because of your views.)

And as far as some of the things you'd be 'persecuted' for ;), I guess you can put me down for some of the same things, ie.,

despiser of Wal Mart

carnivore

60's rock and roll fan

:B)

The reason I dislike liberals/statists and socialists so much is because they presume to know what's best for me and my life and think it's moral to pick my pocket to pay their bills.

Knowing what's best for you and your life ain't the exclusive domain of liberals/statists/socialists, pal. Conservatives (be they neo or traditional), and even a good number of Libertarians have dipped into that pool as well, even amongst those who clamor about liberty and all. And there are plenty of those who have liberal views about a number of issues who don't even come near trying to 'know what's best' for you and yours.

And as far as 'picking your pocket to pay their bills' politically speaking, well its known as paying your taxes, and every government in the world does that, Libertarian-based ones included. They may be too high, or not high enough, depending on your point of view, but at least in this country, we still have taxation _with_ representation.
