I've been a true deadhead for nearly 40 years!...If you've never appreciated the dead before (Jerry Garcia is the greatest gtuitar player that ever lived), I challange you to listen to this...
If the name Brandon Flowers doesn't ring a bell you may know him as the lead singer of rock n' roll band ~The Killers~. He has a solo album out as of yesterday and this is the single released from it! Note the lyrics, "Tell the devil,(only deserves lower case)that he can go back from where he came, his fiery arrows drew their bead in vain". Good song!
That version of "Sugaree" was pretty good but I like the studio version much better.
I used to be a huge Deadhead -- they were the first concert I ever saw...March 1973 at the Nassau Coliseum, Long Island, NY.
But I've taken a revisionist view of their work in recent years...and my tastes have changed, I must admit.
I heard -- and I don't know this for a fact -- that the vocals on Europe '72 were overlaid on top of the live tracks in the studio. (That would explain why they sounded so good on that live album because their vocals generally s---, um, let's just say they weren't very good.)
But I still think that Garcia was one of the great rock guitarists and wrote many fantastic songs. My favorite album is American Beauty.
I still have a vinyl copy of Working Man's Dead. It was purchased because it included Uncle John's Band. It's only been played once. Know what I mean, Vern?

Something about "live" recordings that are not advertised, is that most have some level of overdubbing -- drum beat off or muffled guitar. When the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock came out, there was some serious overdubs, most with original artists if they were alive, but some with different artists. The unfortunate reality is that it is very difficult to walk away from a live recording with everything intact.
Thats a cool idea I play along with youtube all the time but never thought of recording it....

I wonder why so many old mountain and fiddle tunes have to do with Bonaparte.
I have heard more fiddle tunes that have something to do with him......crossing the Rhine, ..marching to the sea....Im sure there must be a fiddle tune somewhere Bonaparte Picking His Nose.....

This first one was used by Aaron Copland as the basis for Hoedown
Wow, did Bonaparte get a writing credit on Copland's "Hoedown"?
:) --He'd be getting a whole bunch of royalties, on a whole basketload of songs if he did.....
I have no idea who wrote most of these old folk melodies--i really dont know if anyone does.
I do know that Copland (and for that matter a lot of composers)based a lot of their work in old simple folk melodies embellished with their composers craft.
This piece by Copland came from a shaker hymn melody "

I think his banjo picking is an excellent addition to an already good tune.
