:biglaugh: :biglaugh:

I gotsta get me to that one of these years---Ive been to Galax a bunch of times --just never when the fiddlers convention was in town.

When I take the long drive down south its the perfect stopping point after the long first days drive--so I do.

Its a cool little town in just a gorgeous area..By that point in the drive Im realizing Im not in Kansas (well Massachusetts really ) anymore.

The culture has changed ---and you can almost feel the music in the air. Porch pickers are a common sight just taking evening walks in that area.

When I was there last year i got a little lost and went over a hill into North carolina which is just a few miles away and found a little restaurant named "Aunt Beas" :biglaugh: :o

.

I swear I was in Mayberry

I've always wanted to go to Galax, Va for the "Fiddler's Gathering". I guess it's gotten bigger, and bigger as the years have gone by.

Now they have all sorts of events there, including band contests.. Here's a clip from this year's band contest.

YIKES!!! biglaugh.gifbiglaugh.gifbiglaugh.gif

I have no idea why Im posting this but Heres me some doofus noodling around with the banjo after a the first few months of banging away on it about a year ago :redface2:

CAUTION: Im the first to admit I dont have a clue what Im doing but for good or for bad it does seem to be what Im doing a lot of these days and figuring it out as I go. Maybe not for the listeners but its fun for me anyway.

Wow. I'm impressed! eusa_clap.gif Neat medley you did there. icon_smile_approve.gif

I heard "Simple Gifts"/ "Ode to Joy", but what was the tune you started and then ended with?

The name of it is right on the tip of my tongue, but I can't spit it out. Scottish fiddle tune, if I recollect correct.

Not to detract from your picking, but here's Mr. Metronome (of the banjo) himself.

Ron Block with AKUS (Alison Krauss and Union Station) with a very young Sierra Hull picking mandolin.

<meta charset="utf-8">Listen to the passion in Jerry Douglas's solo. It's almost like he's sayin'

"Yeah, right, I gotta follow the cute little kid, eh? This'll show'em!"). biglaugh.gif

What a lineup that is!

Can I now say I 'opened' for them ?? :biglaugh:

Its called Loch Lomond -The lyrics go ---"You take the high road and I'll take the low road and I'll be in Scotland before you..."

My grandmother sang it to me when I was about 4 or so.

I had been poking around youtube one day a few months before for no particular reason and had run into this medley by Steve Martin that for some reason finally pushed me over the edge andmade me have to go get a banjo that day ..I went and bought the first one I saw and since the song was fresh in my head more or less started to attempt to pick that particlular tune out with my tin ear and iron hands

So its based in this idea, although I have a ways to go yet to get even close and am way too impatient to try to learn anything note for note.

With all the great banjo players in the world I dont know why it was Steve Martin who finally got me to buy one...but it was....

MStar, you did fine, as long as you don't wear arrow through your head or make ballon animals :biglaugh: btw, I played last Sunday for an ordination at my church and for the last hymn we sang Come thou fount of every blessing(Nettleton) with a friend of the ordinand playing banjo. Of course we also had an hispanic hymn, contemporary praise song, Carribean communion hymn(keyboard setting was steel drums), Celtic Alleluia, and traditional hymnody on organ.

Wow

y'know Thomas, not being a church going guy I really dont know much, hardly anything at all really, about church or chorale music--but about 6 months ago a friend of mine was singing in some special chorus thingy dingy at the local church, so I went....The song they opened with was "Come thou fount of every blessing", although i never considered chorale music my thing or myself particularly spiritual I have to admit that that particularly rendering of a song that up to that point I had never heard before was so profound that it moved me to tears --which is the first time a piece of music had done that to me in quite awhile.

I'd love to hear the banjo accompaniment version if anyone recorded it....
