mstar1
This is an extraordinary movie documenting the daily lives of the Carthusuain Monks at Grand Chartreuse Monastery in the French Alps. It is a difficult movie to describe and to me one that is not so much to be watched as experienced. The entire movie is a near impressionistic meditation that opens a doorway to the possibility of transcendence The monks in the thousand year old monastary are cloistered and live in near total silence, there is no musical score, very little converstaion and only one brief interview........if you are waiting for a carchase scene or some special effects extravaganza this movie isnt for you, but if you want a glimpse of a much slower, gentler and more spiritual world you may like it. To me it was challenging to watch, and very evocative Review from Slant Review from Roger Ebert Review from Rotten Tomatoes Review from Decent Films Philip Gröning’s Into Great Silence is pure cinema at its purest and most exalted This one is probably not playing at the local multiplex, if you have an inclination to see it, it is worth hunting down
