Think about this. Why are they avoiding memorial Day like a OT plague. Pentacost actually falls on the 27th, yet TWIt's are celebrating it on the 20th and allowing all staf, HQ and field, the holiday weekend off. Are they afraid or ashamed of something???
Also, think about this one; Veteran's Day, they always do an Armed Forces song tribute to our veterans, but no one has ever questioned why the Coast Guard has never been included in this. They have served as much as anyone else in war time. WW II, a lot of the US convoy escort duty was handled by treasury class cutters from USCG. USCG manned landing craft during WW II and Korea. They did port security duty at most west coast ports and Danang during Vietnam. They also provided all port security during the 1st Persian Gulf War. If I was USCG and saw this happening year after year at HQ, I would be history & tell R.... & co to kiss my grits!!
I remember observing Memorial Day in-residence. but then we were in the JAL and TJ regime. Is the lack of observation of this important date a Rosy thing?
I don't know personally if they do not recognize Memorial Day at all. I do know it is inadvertantly celebrated (if not with pomp and ceremony) by every member of staff who gets to have a day off! (poor things)
Anywho... It may have something to do with honoring the dead. While Veteran's day honors living veterans, Memorial Day is specific to honoring those that have died. Since twi seems to have the idea that the only way you die is by breaking fellowship with God and since the dead are not alive, putting flowers on the graves of the fallen could be considered akin to worshipping the dead.
I'm just thinking out loud... this is, of course, not from any official source at twi.... Like Mr. B, I don't remember one way or another>
Now, if that be the case, howz about when somebody in TWIt falls asleepo. We don't ignore them, especially mucky-mucks. They always have some type memorial service to celebrate their lives!! Why not do the same for our fallen veterans?
Let's face it guys, without that sacrifice, would we have the freedoms that we do now. Remember, one of the things that was fought for in the American Revolution was the freedom to worship as we please. That includes those at TWI, in case they forgot.
I will say good day for now, now that I've gotten off my soapbox for the afternoon.
In any case, to all GSCer's, have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day and let's always thank God for our freedom.
"We stand for freedom. That is our conviction for ourselves; that is our only commitment for others." JFK
I think that saying a prayer for the families of our fallen veterans and saying a prayer on Memorial day counteracts all those that don't recognize Memorial day. Thats what I will be doing most defianately on that day (Along with Ball Park Franks on the grill)
I have no clue what they do or will do today , but in the past they have recognized Memorial Day. If you check the SNS tapes you may find some #1072 Memorial Day;Ascension had a Presentation of Colors followed by Dean Ellenwoods song Freedoms Soil, and Star Spangled Banner,
I was at the Way HQ in 1983 on Memorial Day (in-residence Corps) and in 1984 (on staff there my interim year). We celebrated Memorial Day both years ... with the day off when I was on Staff ... it IS a place of business and the employees got days off ... hard to believe, I know, but we did. I don't think there is anything insidious about doing Pentecost a week early so the employees can have the day off.

TWI is huge into military people. I think you're wrong here. I know veterans day is a big deal.
I go back to my original observation, since Nandon so kindly brought up about TWI "being so big on our military."
Since we have become involved in the current fighting, how often have you heard, at a STS, OUR military personnel or the leadership of this country prayed for????? Go back, those who have access, and listen to the opening prayers at STS. I think then you will see my point.
May I take the liberty of suggesting that, if you can make the time, attend a Memorial Day observance in your area and look at some of the veterans who are there.
Thank you to Jane, waysider and out there because I believe you understand my point.
They must have changed their position, RR. I think that's what folks are saying, not that they don't believe you. :)
I remember when craiggers was in charge we had that list of 7 things we were to pray for every single time we prayed and some of those were our military men & women as well as the President of the US and other political figures. We were still doing that when I left a few years ago. It took so long to pray for all the things we were required to pray for that they pretty much quit letting folks pray for the things they had on their heart to pray - you know, personal situations, things like that.
His name is Sam Graham. Regardless of whether he is still "in" or not, Sam is absolutely one high quality Marine!
He retired a few years back when he was at the Pentagon. A very admirable man that no one really should have anything to say about other than positives.

So Staff get the day off and there is no Service on Sunday.
But the Wierwille's name is preached daily.
When my brother returned from Iraq he wore a black bracelet, which he later replaced with a metal one. Inscribed is the name of his friend who was killed in an ambush.
The Wierwille front yard is a frikkin' cemetery - complete with a water fountain, plaques, memorials...
The WOW Auditorium was renamed after the LATE founding father (ahem) of TWI... they way a stadium was named back in the old days before the big corporations bought them out...
There is a honkin' big brass statue of VPW in the thing...
No... they don't honor the dead.... not at all.... <_< (it looks like a dang grotto to the BOT by the Garden of Living Waters....!)
(I remember TWI as being patriotic about the patriotic holidays - I left in 2000... did things really change?)
p.s.
Bolshevik - my deepest thanks to your brother for him serving. He should get that name as a tattoo - I know a great artist, if he ever decides to go there...

I never noticed that. :evildenk:
I'll have to pay attention this month.
TWI always had us so focused on every little thing they did do "right" that I rarely noticed the things they didn't do.

Somewhat off topic.
I grew up in the Great Lakes region so I'm probably more aware of the Coast Guard's contributions than someone who grew up in, let's say, Arizona.
The CG has been around almost as long as we have been a country though they were not officially called that specific name until about WWI.
I think part of the recognition problem people have is that the CG was never part of the Dept. Of Defense in a technical sense.
Originally they were under the Dept. of the Treasury and then the Dept. of Transportation. Now, they are under The Dept. of Homeland Security.
None of this diminishes the contributions they have made.
I'm only mentioning this to point to why people have perhaps been less aware of the CG than other branches.
As to the regognition of Memorial Day: Is it some how tied to the idea of not esteeming one day above another?
I don't really know. It was just a thought .
