Its easier to get forgiveness that it is permission.
That one served me well for years in TWI - in other words, don't ask - just do what you want, if someone doesn't like it - tough. Just apologize. Why ask to do something when the answer would most likely be "no." Especially if you were in residence.

The most observable ethic was, to me, that being merciful, kind, gracious, etc... was a sign of weakness. The more abusive, callous and uncaring you were, they stronger you were perceived.
