More than likely, you're experiencing "socket creep". What's probably happened, the soundcard moved juuuuuust enough to make it so it doesn't work.
The soundcard needs to be pushed back into its original position. If you're not comfortable opening up the computer, find someone who is.
The other possibility is, the sound got muted either by speakers not being turned on, or in the computer itself. Find your volume control (should be in Accessories), and make sure it wasn't muted there and all the sliders are up all the way.
