My wife learned that she has to coerce me by giving me enough alcohol to have a strong buzz going before I loosen up enough to dance with her. I really don't like dancing.
I love the way you described dancing in relation to our walk with the Lord!
"While dancing women learn to follow the leader (God will have a bride for His son who follows His lead).
And by the same token men learn the gentle, lovely way to lead (how gentle is Jesus as He leads us to the still waters of His soul)."
In the dancing that my wife and I have been doing for a few years now - The Carolina Shag (one of the sub-types of Swing) - leading gently and subtly is stressed so that the dance appears smooth and beautiful. Very slight hand movements cue the woman that a certain dance step/movement is to occur and seeing it done well is surely something. For folks who may not know, the Carolina Shag is a popular dance down in the Carolinas, especially the Myrtle Beach area. It is gaining popularity in other states on the eastern US.
Anyway, just wanted to put in my plug for dancing. It's fun to go and do and learn new moves and hone old ones - always room to improve.
It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing! Do-wop-do-wha...
Dancing is a beautiful thing.
Peruser you shag?
We do some of that too.
Shag is a very fun dance.
To those men that don't like to dance I say, loosen up and don't worry about how you look. Once you do that it becomes a great feeling of freedom.
I used to be so scared to dance. Then I started swinging and thought I could fake it. I quickly realised that I didn't know how to lead. Once I learned how to lead I saw the light.
The beauty of dance (partner dancing) is not just how cool it looks but its the communication, the laguage of the dance. Its the connection you make with the other person. When you get to that point you can begin to express your selves in your dance (as a couple).
My wife and i say 'those that dance together stay together'. That may not be true, but it was something that brought us close together.
Peruser- I just saw your profile. Do you live in northern Virginia? Do you dance in DC? That is where I met my wife, at a Glen Echo dance.
Well I was in the era of "dancing bah mah seh elf, uh uh uh oh." Everyone at clubs danced by themselves. You didn't need a partner, you just got out and did your thing.
I remember awhile back in the mid 90's I went out to some bar with some people I worked with, this song came on and everybody started to line dance. I was like....WTF? What's going on? I felt so STUPID!
And then when the Macadamia nut or whatever dance came out that everyone was doing I just threw my hands up in the air and gave up.
...It's hard to be humble when you own a Rottweiler...
Some of my favorite movies are the ones with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. I wish my wife and I could dance like that. What an expression of tenderness and teamwork at the same time. We did some '40s style swing dancing at my neice's wedding reception and it shocked everybody there. They weren't used to seeing us dance. (At least I hope that's the reason they were shocked. I hope they weren't thinking we suffered from the Elaine Benes dance syndrome!) We were only able to do about 1&1/2 numbers though, out of respect for my hernia.
Sometimes my wife's feet start jerking spasmodically as a side effect of other difficulties. When that happens around other people, I start singing,
"Hear the beat
Of dancing feeeeet,
On the avenue
I'm takin' you to...
Forty-second street."
It breaks the tension and everybody laughs.
Some of my favorite movie dance numbers:
-Anything Fred A. & Ginger R.
-James Cagney and Ruby Keeler doing "Shanghai Lil" in "Footlight Parade"
-"Lullaby of Broadway"
-"We're in the Money" and "Forgotten Man" from "Gold Diggers of 1933"
-"I Love a Military Man" from the Shirley Temple movie with Alice Faye and the guy who played the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz
-"Forty-second Street" from "Forty-second Street"
-"Pennies Form Heaven" from the Steve Martin movie of the same name
Sometimes my wife and I just do a few spontaneous steps around the house, ala the situations where dance numbers spring up in the old movies. Sometimes I dip here when we kiss. It's fun!
Dancin' is fun. I was taking ballet jazz and tap. I am pretty good at tap, but not too ballerina like. I had to quit, no babysitter.
I haven't been club dancing since before I got married 12 years ago. I would like to do that sometime again. Self expression can be sooooo healing at times.
Nandon, which type of dancer are you? good or bad?

Dancing is great and I love it. But, I have found that if you do what you love to do and you do it with a passion, girls dig you even more.

That doesn't mean I'm good at it.
Tim and I have danced together, (in public) only once at a friends wedding reception.
We found that--
between us--
we have--
FOUR LEFT FEET!
So--
it was fun--and we considered it a moral victory that we didn't fall down!
Kay!

I have a dear friend who is 78 and still dancing (husband and partner is 82).
While dancing women learn to follow the leader (God will have a bride for His son who follows His lead).

I love to line dance. I just wish everyone was as good as I am. Every time we turn they're all facing the wrong way.

Hey... put another dime in the juke box baby...
"Locomotion"
Everybody's doin' a brand-new dance, now
(Come on baby, do the Loco-motion)
I know you'll get to like it if you give it a chance now
(Come on baby, do the Loco-motion)
My little baby sister can do it with me;
It's easier than learning your A-B-C's,
So come on, come on, do the Loco-motion with me.
You gotta swing your hips, now. Come on, baby.
Jump up. Jump back. Well, now, I think you've got the knack.
Now that you can do it, let's make a chain, now.
(Come on baby, do the Loco-motion)
A chug-a chug-a motion like a railroad train, now.
(Come on baby, do the Loco-motion)
Do it nice and easy, now, don't lose control:
A little bit of rhythm and a lot of soul.
So come on, come on, do the Loco-motion with me.
Move around the floor in a Loco-motion.
(Come on baby, do the Loco-motion)
Do it holding hands if you get the notion.
(Come on baby, do the Loco-motion)
There's never been a dance that's so easy to do.
It even makes you happy when you're feeling blue,
So come on, come on, do the Loco-motion with me.

Dancing Days
------------
Dancin' days are here again, the summer evenings grow
I got my flower, I got my power, I got a woman who knows
I said, it's alright, y'know it's alright
I guess it's all in my heart
You'll be my only, my one and only
Is that the way it should start
Crazy ways are evident in the way you're wearin' your clothes
Sippin' booze is precedent as the evening starts to glow
Y'know it's alright, I said, it's alright
Y'know it's all in my heart
You'll be my only, my one and only
Is that the way it should start, dig, now
You told your mama I'd get you home
but you didn't say that I had no car
I saw a lion, he was standin' alone with a tadpole in a jar
You know it's alright, I said, it's alright
I guess it's all in my heart, heart, heart
You'll be my only, my one and only
Is that the way it should start
Said, dancin' days are here again as the summer evenings grow
You are my flower, you are my power, you are my woman who knows
I said, it's alright, y'know it's alright
You know it's all in my heart
You'll be my only, yes, my one and only, yes
Is that the way it should start
I know that it's right
