VP taught that "the life of the flesh is in the blood." He used the above quote in the foundational piffle class to prove his point.
The blood does carry oxygen throughout the body, as you point out. And Leviticus does make a connection between blood and life itself.
VP also taught that the person becomes a living soul with his or her first breath.
I don't know when the "soul" becomes "alive," and I don't buy into VP's lack of concern for the fetus as opposed to a newborn baby, but I do know this medically and anatomically:
At the exact moment a newborn infant takes it's first breath, the circulation of the blood in it's body changes from fetal circulation to normal circulation, changing its course in the body and direction in the heart and lungs. An obstetric nurse or doc here could possibly give you a more exact description. But I do know, that if a certain heart valve involved in the process of changing over the circulation doesn't close completely at this precise moment, the new circulation is compromised and the blood is not properly oxygenated, causing a "blue" baby. If not surgically corrected, it is possible that the baby can suffer severe anoxia and die.
I thought it was interesting to note studying fetal anatomy and circulation, that the circulation changeover always happens at the precise moment the first breath is taken.
I don't think that necessarily proves anything, just is interesting.
As the baby passes thru and down the birth canal, there is an exact amount of pressure (PSI) put on the baby, stimulating the lungs,Colon all to prepare for the first breath.there is a word, and I wish I could remember it, that is derived from the word Pneuma..
Fortunately, today that surgery to close the hole is routine and quick--so many babies saved. My mother buried my sister when she died 2 months to the day of her birth from this condition in 1947. Thank God other parents are spared this heartache so often today.
