  1. Oops. Thought about what I just said. No disrespect meant, Paw!
  2. Well that's a lot better than getting it from the other end.
  3. Yea, I know, there's a real person behind that handle!
  4. Well, one of my all time favorite handles is still around!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    8th Corps

Four months is too long. I guess.
  6. My youngest son, an 8th grader at the time, went to mathcounts nationals last spring. (Can you guess his name, Rummy?) When I was looking over the roster of competitors, I noticed there were several other states, besides ours, where the four winners all came from one school in one town. It made me think that maybe the excellent math teachers and programs are spotty. Give the kids credit (I sure did!) but I have the feeling there are plenty of students with great potential around that dont have the benefit of the teachers and programs who can best help their potential to be realized. A lot of them are no doubt in rural areas, of which we have plenty around. Oh, wne we went to the school board meeting that recognized the team, their teacher/coach made a very plain point of thanking the board for providing the proper curriculum and program. Whether they or some of their predecessors did it didn't matter; the point was made.
  7. I agree with that only to the extent that maybe...just maybe...that's the way it should be. In practice, and I may (surprise) be agreeing with GT on this, intent probably goes out the window. If a party feels he or she is injured by the words, and can show it, then it doesn't matter what the intent was; that intent doesn't make any difference if, for just one example, we are talking about a civil suit. Anyone who has gone though the "courses" on sexual harassment in the workplace knows that the official word is, (quoting from an FAA seminar I found, which seems exactly the same as I remember going through here) ...."It is important to understand that intent is not relevant in determining whether or not a behavior is sexual harassment. All that matters is the impact of the behavior on the work environment."(italics in the text; not mine). IMHO MR's language creates an issure as emotionally charged as sexual harassment. And I say maybe because I can see how a person can hurt someone with words without intending to, but still carrying the responsibility....i.e. not thinking at all about what we are saying; that is, not thinking before you speak, is what I want to say going to hurt anyone? and/or just not caring whether or not it will.
  8. just a thought....whether or not they realize they mean something to others. could what they mean to themselves be as important? more so?
  9. Simon...may your years some day exceed the number of wins the Cubs get the next season they win the World Series. And dont laugh too hard; after all I didnt say when that event would take place.
  10. Thanks Simon, although who wants an umpire's two cents? And where are there any other Cleveland Indians fans? Maybe Linda Z I guess... But I really do hope it was a good one. I suppose you get to be on the AARP mailing list now.
  11. Maybe we need more "pests" like you. I suppose you can spend too much time and energy being a "pest"...like becoming a dumping ground for someone else's personal woes. Epecially over time. More especially if someone doesnt appear to be in any danger at all. It can wear pretty thin, can't it? On the other hand, I think of the "no one saw it coming" type remarks such as Paw and Lori offered.
  12. I didnt realize there was such a celebration going on over here when I started that birthday thread on the open forum. I guess I should have known since Simon lives here anyway.
  13. I guess I didnt realize when I started this thread that there was already a big celebration for him going on over in the 9th corps thread...where he seems to live most of the time anyway...at least when he is not on the baseball thread. So anyway you can see more of the greetings for him over there. Oh well. The thought was there.
  14. Good grief; if I saw it right on the forums page, Simonzelotes is 50 today! Lessee, that means, when I last saw him, he was.... Oh, no, he couldnt have been in diapers, he was playing an IRS taxman.
  15. I didn't mean to suggest that Soggy was refusing help. Maybe it wasnt even taken that way, but when I read it again I saw how it could be. But there may be little or no difference between a feeling that there is no one who is willing to help and a feeling that even if the many are willing to help, there is no one who can.
  16. Is it really a feeling that you cant find someone who wants to help...or a feeling that, willing or not, there is no one who can help?
  17. You mean you can actually associate with them and talk with them without getting deeply involved?
  18. This sounds like the responses I have heard wuite a number of times from different sides of both the political and religious spectrum, when courts make a decision that is unpopular with a particular side. Of course I dont think there is anyone who will say that courts arent very wrong at times, but that is so much a matter of opinion...as is doctrine and also as are some other things. The good way to take care of this is given by Catcup early in that thread that sits at the top of the "About the Way" forum but is not posted too very much these days. Testimony from the people involved..."what happened to you?".
  19. I find two points here that seem to fit with the testimony I have seen, not only on this thread but in general over the years. Kindness seemed to proliferate more among the lower echelons, and seemed to be squelched more in general "as the years rolled on". In the corps I tried to surprise people with gifts from our great financial resources (?!) on a few occasions. Sometimes I wouldnt get any feedback, a couple times I did. My favorite feedback involved a Snoopy lamp during my Interim WOW year in Philly 1978-79. One act that I considered "kind" (though not everyone might have, heh heh) was in the fall of 1979 at HQ when Mrs. W. gave us corps men permission to raid the Wierwille home (VPW was away at the time) while the women were having a nacho party; we even got some traiterous kind help from Naomi T.
  20. You were a hippie??!! And you're right of course. You are not shy about discussing "the snot" as you put it. In fact I think your posting here has an honesty that lends itself (IMO) to more believability when you unload on the bad stuff. And I'm sure you have plenty more to unload. I remember several years ago when one of our frequent posters described very well an act of kindness he/she did for someone, but had to preface it with the disclaimer, "then waybrain took over", as if it were a curse to admit that he/she was expressing kindness as an individual. Actually, I would be interested in hearing more of the not so good as you saw it.
  21. I agree Rum. It was my experience as well.
  22. In partial defense of Rum, I believe he was trying to say we were zombies... not that we are (ex-way) zombies, but instead ex (way zombies). Now before he questions what I mean by partial defense, I will clarify...I think the fact that some showed genuine kindness in TWI shows that whoever did so wasnt a zombie, even then. On the other hand, maybe it was his intent to point that out with a "tongue in cheek" remark. In that case ignore this post. Trying to remember if I showed him kindness at any point?! Oh yeah, now I remember...first day of classat Emporia, I swapped seats with him (we sat next to each other before and after) so he and someone else could sit next to each other because they were working on some important project.
  23. Yea, they let this thread slide for just over 5 days once recently. They're lucky someone doesnt cheat and posr on all the corps threads just to bury this one on page 2 (and that's not a Paul Harvey commercial). We of course are not like that. We're the humble quiet type. (Like the time I quietly raided the HQ pantry solo once at midnight in Nov. 79). Although, funny thing, I think I may be getting to be a little more like Simon since I found out I used to know him. I think it got pushed down only to fourth, no worse.
  24. Sounds a lot like Wordwolf's invention of "5 x 3" cards. When TWI has done something out of the usual usage, we call it Wayspeak. When they have dome something standard, like "3 x 5" cards. we have to either change it (Like WW did) or ignore it (TWI playing non TWI music like "Beautiful Ohio"., which became the state song back in 1969...dunno when t was written.) If we go by the matchups against Penn State, it will be a close, low scoring game. Both defenses stiffled PSU's offense, and neither offense looked too high powered. OSU trailed PSU at the half, and only scored 28 points because of gifts from the PSU offense trying to play catchup against the Buckeye defense. Both QBs are pretty highly regarded, but both have had their top statistical performances against some weaker teams. Or at least against weaker defenses. Notice I didnt say best performances...as they were facing a very strong PSU defense. Ohio State 17-10...I dont even necessarily think they are better than the Wolverines. Playing in the old horseshoe is the tiebreaker.
